Hi everyone, my name is Ashley Fontanilla, and I had the great pleasure of being Carmelita’s youngest child and only daughter. It is with a heavy heart that I have to write this as doing so only makes things feel even more real.

On October 15th, 2021, my mom passed away after complications of having her third stroke. Her recent hospitalization was a sudden shock to our family and it’s still unbelievable that it all ended so quickly.

The last time I saw my mom conscious was on September 21, 2021. She just came back from her routine dialysis treatment to the rehabilitation facility (where she was staying short term recovering from a recent hip surgery) and we shared our last beautiful conversation together. The next morning, she was hospitalized after being unresponsive. She was diagnosed with brain seizures at Memorial Hospital of Gardena where a lot of unknowns unfolded. We kept getting mixed messages from different doctors and while I was bedside everyday, I can say how traumatizing it was to be there feeling so helpless. My mom was later transported to Keck Hospital of USC for more in-depth tests. We later found out she had a major third stroke affecting both sides of her brain, and they explained to us the very low chances of her being able to communicate, speak, eat, and walk. In respect to my mom’s wishes, we placed her on comfort care for end-of-life measures. 6 days later, she went to rest eternally in heaven.

It breaks my heart she is no longer with us, but I truly believe my mom is finally at peace and no longer in pain. She spent the last four years of her life going through hemodialysis treatments and survived two strokes in the previous years. With many other health conditions that she dealt with, I could only imagine how much of an inner struggle it was for her, but she made it look so effortless on most days. She was a fighter in life, and despite her illnesses, remained persistent until the end to stay strong for her kids.

She loved to eat, travel, and spend time with family. Being family oriented was very important to her and she always gave back when she could. Carmelita leaves behind her three children — Rumel, Nick Ryan, and myself, Ashley.

We humbly ask all of our family, friends, coworkers, and the community for help with the burial expenses for our mother. Your donation will help lift the financial burden of the viewing/cremation services, give her a proper memorial, and allow our family to transport her remains to her final resting place next to her parents in the Philippines. Every little bit helps as we were not prepared for such expenses. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. God Bless.

Forever missing your smiles mama. Until we meet again.
