Caroline Sleight Kreischer gravestone CLOSED

Caroline Sleight Kreischer (1885-1981) was a descendant of one of Staten Island's most prominent families. At the time of her death in 1981, she was the oldest living graduate of P.S. 1 and Tottenville High School.

She was born in the house where she resided all her life with her parents, and, later, with her husband Harry A.W. Kreischer. Harry died in 1934. Carrie, as she was known to locals, became a teacher, and taught at the former P.S. 31 in Sandy Ground, P.S. 3 in Pleasant Palins and P.S. 5 in Huguenot. In 1975 the Tottenville Improvement Council awarded her the Gold Key Award for her extraordinary service to the community. She also volunteered at Historic Richmond Town for many years. She freely gave to others, but never asked for anything in return.

Carrie died with no surviving family. For whatever reason, there is no stone marking her final resting place in the Sleight family plot in Bethel Cemetery, Tottenville. We hope to correct that with a grave marker that will help commemorate her life and her contributions to our community.

Thank you for your help in honoring Carrie this way.
