Carolyn Leonhart Quintet

It’s been ten years since my last album and it has been a powerful decade filled with beauty, growth and lots of change.

While raising my now ten year old son, touring with Steely Dan, and teaching in the jazz department at City College of NY, I’ve been developing music that combines the many styles I love: classic and modern jazz, gospel and R&B.  The artists who are currently making amazing music that combines all these elements have inspired me to explore creating music that truly reflects my aesthetic and brings joy to my ears and soul.

Over the past few years I’ve been writing and arranging music for my group, The Carolyn Leonhart Quintet, and after playing and developing these songs live, we are now ready to document it.

I’ll be joined by an amazing group of musicians: Myron Walden on tenor and soprano saxophone, Christian Sands on piano, Richie Goods on bass, and Rodney Green on drums. These stunning and singular musicians have been playing with me at Smoke and Mezzrow in recent years, and they have truly become my Dream Team.  My brother, Michael Leonhart, will be producing this recording.  He and I have an incredible creative history together and I can always look to him to push me to my highest level.

This project and the upcoming album encompasses everything that I love and and am passionate about creating and performing: jazz standards, modern standards, arrangements of pop songs, an original lyric to a solo by the great Tommy Flanagan, as well as new original material.
