Hi, we are the family of Carrie Beth Sneddon Spolan. Our mom is extremely ill she has Osteomyelitis in her spine L3 & L4 due to Sepsis. She had gotten extremely weak and was steadily declining, she had no memory( little memory of the past 5 months), slurred speech and couldn't stand, sit, lay or walk without being in excruciating pain or assistance. She would go from her bed to the couch and couldn't do anything for herself. Her PCP sent her to the ER in January and was admitted to Uniontown Hospital literally days from death. She was there until February 6. They did many blood tests, X-rays, MRIs and CT scans, and lumbar punctures. They found our mom had been Septic for months and the sepsis caused osteomyelitis with abscesses on the front and back side of her L4 and L5 vertebrae. They treatedd her for blood clots with her history. She has a PICC line and getting IV antibiotics 3 X a day for the past 6 weeks and has at least 4 more weeks to go. She can't have surgery yet because her body would reject the hardware to fix her leg from the damage to her spine. She now has no choice but to walk with a walker and her house looks more like a nursing home than a house. She has nurses coming to see her regularly and Morgan takes care of making sure her IVs are done as well as her personal care. The Sepsis was probably caused by misdiagnosed pneumonia the doctors think and that would have been a secondary infection from Covid. Mom was in the hospital again this past week for 3 days because of pain, slurred speech and medication issues. Ruby ran many tests on her she consulted with the surgeons about when she could finally have surgery. After the tests were run and the comparison of the former imaging they found there isn't much change to the scans and her CRP blood work was still showing infection. The surgeons informed us with so much damage that has been done to her L4 and L5 and the surrounding area of her spine from the infection and how it has eaten away bone and tissue and continues to do so the only surgical option will be for them to relieve pressure from her back and it should help with her pain in her leg. (No guarantees). That's not for 6 to 8 weeks yet (Hopefully). Her CRP numbers have to be down and IV antibiotics finished. There is no surgery they can do on her back to relieve the pain or repair the damaged bone. They can't tell her if she will walk with a walker, or cane or what will be needed for the rest of her life. She will need a pain clinic to manage her pain and physical therapy. She has permanent memory impairment and a lifetime of pain and suffering ahead. She has what they are calling chronic Osteomyelitis because they will never be able to get the full infection removed from the bone in her spine. Mom will never be able to do many of the things she used to do like even walking Ohiopyle (her favorite place) or as simple as walking the dogs. If you choose to donate your support will go to pay thousands of dollars in medical bills that the insurance doesn't cover and help with travel expenses to Ruby in Morgantown. Since Mike had to retire to be in Uniontown and help take care of our mom he took a significant pay cut. Any help you can give even if it is just to lift our family up in prayer we appreciate it beyond words. Our mom was always there to help others when they needed help. She and Mike were both volunteer firefighters for 10+ years. Since Mike retired in December to help take care of our mom his pension hasn't kicked in yet and it could take several more months to start. The Federal BOP pension could take up to 6 months to start and the medical bills are thousands upon thousands of dollars. Now our Mom and Mike need some serious help. PLEASE SHARE THIS POST!! Scott, Ryan, Matthew, Morgan, Willie and Brooke, thank you.
