Carter Family Relocation
Donation protected
We are reaching out to our community, family, and friends, for help in a time of crisis. Our family is in danger. Some years ago, we purchased a home on land contract on the west side of South Bend (IN). The neighborhood has always been rough, but until recently we had not been directly affected by violence and managed to get along well with all of our neighbors. In the last month, our home and car have been shot through 8 times. We are not the intended target, but whoever is doing this has come back 6 times in 5 weeks and they are using our property as cover while unloading now hundreds of bullets on one of our other (newer) neighbors. The police can do nothing without anyone willing to come forward with information. We feel we need to relocate for the safety of our children, but are not in a financial position to do so. We are in the middle of renovating our property and have a few years left to pay off our land contract. We can not sell the house until we own the deed, which means if we leave now we lose everything we have invested, with no profit to be able to start again somewhere new. Our car was inoperable for almost 3 weeks after the first shooting. It is our only vehicle. It was hit again a few nights ago and requires further repair. My husband is a private contractor in carpentry but can only work if he has transportation for himself and all his equipment. We are a single income family, and it is a struggle. I stay home with our three daughters and am responsible for their care and homeschool education. I am humbly coming forward to ask for help in this hard time. I can not see a wise, affordable solution. Our family's safety is our first priority, but we can not leave our only home with nothing to start over. I want to protect my children, but that includes keeping a roof over their heads. We would like to move to Maine to be closer to my husband's family. Carpenters are in very high demand there and are paid significantly better than anything my husband has found here. We have discussed saving to purchase a larger, used camper to live out of while we get our roots established out there, but that means we would also need a reliable truck big enough to pull it. We have also discussed looking into rentals, but the fact of the matter is that we do not have enough money to keep up with our current expenses + afford first month's rent + last month + deposit + opening new utilities + packing up our big old house and making the move. Prices are rising on everything and we are barely getting by as it is. We feel incredibly stuck and are hoping to raise as much as we can as quickly as possible to get our girls to safety, quickly, in the best way we can discern once we have pooled all our resources. Thank you for taking the time to read our story, please feel free to share as we work hard to find our next best solution.
