Carter was a regular 2 year old boy, with no prior health conditions, when his life was changed forever by a severe and sudden Stroke.
On 29th October 2023, Carter was enjoying a day like any other when he suddenly his life was changed forever.
An Ischaemic (blood clot) stroke attacked the left hand side of his brain at the base of the central artery. I saw his face drop one sided, and we raced to get him medical attention immediately. Stroke in children is so rare. Rarer still to be as severe as Carter's. And so many of the medical professionals were sure he was just having a seizure.
Once taken to CT, Carter began having seizures, and had to be sedated, and given oxygen.
Unfortunately, we were right, and Carter was rushed to Southampton hospital, and spent a week in a medically induced coma in the ICU to wait out the brain swelling. Initially we were told to take life an hour at a time, as he may not survive. This type of stroke in adults has an 80% mortality rate!
Should he survive, we were told he may never walk or speak again. No one could predict how what his future may be.
After his time in the coma in ICU, he dropped down to High Dependancy, and he began an intensive course of rehabilitation and 2 months in hospital.
Carter began having more seizures and woke with no ability to sit, stand, speak or even eat or drink. The following 2 months were spent learning all these skills and will suffer challenges and changes for the rest of his life.
Carter has made amazing progress! He can now eat, and put some sentences together. He has even begun attending pre school a few hours a week.
However, we have a long way to go! Life is very different for Carter, and having a newly disabled child means we have some changes to make, to accommodate him at home and about!
Not all of his treatments that will help him will be funded by the NHS (although we are incredibly greatful for what has been), and so we must do what we can to help him access the best future he can!
We'd be so greatful, if you could spare a little support to help us access extra care and for Carter throughout his recovery and beyond. All fundraising will go towards safer furniture for Carter, better equipment for rehab, extra health care and provisions for appointments.
Thank you
