Cary Fire Protection District's Memorial Day MURPH
Donation protected
For the past several years, a small group of Cary Fire Protection District firefighters completed the Murph workout on Memorial Day in honor of fallen US troops. What is the Murph workout? A Murph is a difficult workout consisting of a 1 mile run, 100 pull ups, 200 push ups, 300 squats followed by another 1 mile run – all while wearing a 20lb weighted vest. The Murph was named after LT. Michael Murphy, a Navy SEAL that was killed in action in 2005. The workout has since become extremely popular with fitness enthusiasts and military members alike and is commonly completed on Memorial Day each year.
What started off as 3 CFPD members completing a Murph workout on shift during Memorial Day 2019 has now turned into a Department wide fundraising event for charity. This year on Memorial Day, about 20 Cary Firefighters will be participating in the Murph Event in hopes of raising money for military related charities. All donations will be split between two charities that help both US veterans and active-duty service members. The two charities we have chosen are as follows:
1) Wounded Warrior Project. The WWP is a well-known registered nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that offers a variety of programs, services and events for veterans that have been wounded in action. WWP offers a wide array of programs ranging from providing mental and physical health support programming to helping injured veterans transfer back into civilian life to providing veteran employment programs to help struggling veterans find civilian work. More information on the charity can be found here: https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/
2) Help USA Troops. Help USA Troops is a local charity based out of Arlington Heights and is a registered nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that provides care packages to troops that are deployed overseas. The organization was formed in honor of a local Marine, LCpl James Stack, who was killed in action on November 10, 2010 while serving in Afghanistan. Each year, the group holds packing drives where groups of volunteers pack the care packages and sends them to our troops abroad. The donated funds will go towards care package supplies and shipping costs to send the packages to the troops. More information on the charity can be found here: http://www.helpusatroops.com/
Any and all donations will be greatly appreciated! Please note that none of the money raised will go back to the Fire Department, as 100% of the money will be donated to the two charities. Thank you for supporting your Cary Firefighters and your United States Veterans!
