Caryma's Art, Advocacy, and Legal Education

My name is Caryma Sa'd.
I am a Toronto-based lawyer and editorial cartoonist. I am perhaps best known for providing critical commentary on law and policy, both through mainstream media outlets and via my personal social media platforms.
My last GoFundMe project, the Ford Failed Ontario digital activity book, was fully funded within three days. The final product was made freely available within three weeks. Its reach has exceeded 150,000 devices between downloads and impressions. People want to be informed and entertained.

Advocacy takes many shapes and forms. I have a distinctive approach with my use of comics to draw attention to inequities and absurdities in the newscycle. As quoted in the Toronto Star:
“If [an editorial comic] contributes to making either legal information more accessible, or prompting critical thinking from people about the laws and policies and how they shape our day-to-day life, then I’ve done my job.”
***
The success of my last GoFundMe has emboldened me to dream bigger. I am raising money to accomplish two related objectives:
1. Produce ten episodes of Caryma's Rules. My online show breaks down topical news issues in an intelligent way for laypeople. The show will also feature grassroots organizing work that's taking place across the province, with a view towards normalizing political engagement outside of just voting.
2. Convert the front of the Chinatown Centre to a free art gallery and community learning space. Even though it may take time before we can gather safely, I have big plans for the windows to keep the failures of Doug Ford's government fresh in the mind of any passersby.
***
I am seeking your patronage, not your charity. I have been producing self-funded editorial comics for over a year. Crowdfunding allows those with the means who enjoy my work to subsidize the expenses so I can do even more. I will cover content development, production costs, and overhead with any money raised. Everything produced in relation to these projects will be free for the public.
My long-term goal is to unreservedly commit myself to working at the intersection of art and advocacy. This is merely a step in that direction.
