Cash's Transplant & Family Temp. Relocation to SEA
Donation protected
Hello everyone, this is Cash's Auntie Megan - I have started a new fundraising page for Cash specific to his recent liver transplant. For those that are new to Cash's journey you can find more here.
Over this last summer, Cash was diagnosed with end stage liver failure and was listed for transplant this fall. No one estimated a match would be found so quickly but, thankfully for Cash, our prayers were answered.
Late on November 25th, Erin and Scott got the call that a donor match had been found and within 12 hours they had travelled up to Seattle Children's for the pre-operative preparations. Cash underwent liver transplant surgery on the evening of November 26th.
The surgery went well without any major complications and he is now recovering at Seattle Children’s PICU.
Leading up to the transplant, Cash has been dependent on twice weekly transfusions of FFP and Protein C to keep him from being hospitalized. He has also been on 24/7 continuous G-tube feeds to keep his glucose stable, just 30 mins without feeds would put him in a severe hypoglycemic state. This level of intervention is rare and reaffirmed how poorly his liver was operating.
When Cash was diagnosed with CDG in 2022, Scott and Erin decided Erin would leave her job as an Attorney to be with Cash full time. From then on Cash has had an arduous medical journey. He spent over 180 days in and out of the hospital with the longest stint occurring at the beginning of 2023. Once he recovered from the acute kidney failure his doctors recommended he explore liver transplant due to his diseased and damaged liver. It felt like their world was crashing down on them but they took comfort in knowing Cash is a fighter. In Scott and Erin’s minds there was no alternative but to pursue a transplant. There was not a positive outlook for Cash without transplant.
It was at that point that they knew they needed help from their community. That they wouldn’t be able to do this alone.
They never thought they would need to seek financial support much less have to make these choices as parents. The past year and a half has also been difficult in the tech industry which has severely impacted Scott’s role at Intel. When Intel announced they would be instilling austerity measures in 2023, they felt like they were taking a deep breath under water. Scott felt an enormous amount of pressure and responsibility. For the past year they have been focusing on both their boys and keeping things afloat.
That is why this GoFundMe page is important. Our hope is to take some of the pressure off their load. They felt tremendously grateful for the help and support they received earlier this year when Cash was on life supporting dialysis. Now that Cash is a transplant patient he will need special care for the rest of his life.
For now, Cash will need to remain in Seattle for at least 3-4 months depending on how quickly he recovers. This means the family will be separated for the most part and Scott, Erin and Cash won’t be able to see big brother Kelly (4) as often as they would like. Their goal is to eventually find housing that will accommodate all four of them. This is where you can help.
These funds will help with:
- Travel and long term lodging / housing during Cash’s inpatient care as well as outpatient care
- Relocation and moving expenses due to transplant
- Mileage, tolls, and parking fees for transplant related medical travel
- Gas and travel expenses to ensure Kelly (big bro) can visit and stay with his family as much as possible
- Childcare support for Kelly while in Seattle long term
- Costs of keeping Kelly’s spot in pre-school
- Costs for maintaining an empty home in Portland
- Post transplant immunosuppressants which Cash will be on for the remainder of his life
- In home therapy services while Cash recovers. Most recovery periods last for at least a year post transplant
- Medical care for Scott and Erin who will need to seek out of state and network services while in Seattle
Scott, Erin and Kelly, have all been the foundation for Cash's strength over these past two years. Please help me to bring this family together during these challenging times and to ease some of the hardship that essential medical care has brought with it. Cash and his entire family thanks you for your support, your generosity & your positive thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
Megan
