Cash’s Surgical Bill

Donation protected
Cash is a 6 year old Alaskan Malamute mix rescue out of a shelter in North Carolina. He spent roughly the first three years of his life in a very abusive household. He was taken in by animal control and surrendered to the shelter in 2020. Due to his abusive upbringing, Cash was very skittish with being pet at first, he wasn’t dog friendly, and wasn’t meant for a family with small children. For all of these reasons, Cash quickly became unwanted at the shelter which left him in a very unsafe position.

After seeing Cash for the first time and hearing his story, I knew he had to come home with me. Life isn’t fair and it isn’t Cash’s fault for the environment he grew up in. Cash was given a second chance and now, about 3.5 years later, it has been so incredible to watch him grow. His personality is so subtle and so loud at the same time. Convinced he once was a father because he has yet to tear up one toy. Instead, he holds them in his front paws and licks them as if he’s cleaning them. He goes crazy for any type of treat (his favorite are blueberries). Cash has transformed from a skittish, nippy rescue pup into a loving, happy, and energetic dog. He loves chasing the rabbits around outside, eating the snow off the ground, and everything inbetween that involves being active. Some of his favorite activities including hiking with his mom (even through a hail storm), camping, beach walks, and evening runs.

Midway through the month of February, Cash had a typical case of the “zoomies” in the dog park and heartbreakingly, he let out a yelp and then completely collapsed crying. He was unable to weight bear through his back leg all day so I took him into the emergency vet that evening. After lots of tests, x-rays, and blood panels, Cash was diagnosed with a full CCL (equivalent to ACL in humans) rupture and a partial MCL tear. Due to the full rupture and how big of a dog Cash is, surgery is his only option if we want him to return to full activity and protect the longevity of his joint health as he ages. He is currently in so much pain awaiting surgery and we are confined to my second story apartment as he can’t navigate the stairs (and being 96 pounds, he’s too heavy for me to carry by myself). Potty training on the porch has been …. interesting, to say the least. Cash has been quoted total surgical costs between $5,500 and $7,000. I am pursuing a Doctoral degree and have been in school for the past 6-7 years; for that reason, finances are tight. We plan to travel from New England back to North Carolina to allow cash to have the best care possible.

Cash is by no means perfect, but then again, neither am I and maybe that’s why we fit so well. This is a type of companionship I have never experienced before and it is indescribable, he is my best friend. I am asking for help so Cash can return to chasing the rabbits and hiking to see the sunset. He has many, full years left ahead of him and I don’t believe finances should be a limiting factor in hindering his potential for a full return to health and strength.

Thank you reading his story,
Hugs from Bri and sloppy kisses from Cash.
