BU Friends, Let's Help Low-Wage Workers

We've all been affected by COVID-19, but with the majority of non-essential businesses shuttered and U.S. unemployment rates skyrocketing, the lowest-paid workers and the most economically-disadvantaged communities will be hit the hardest. Low-wage earners are the most at-risk of food insecurity, homelessness, and other health issues. While the government approved a stimulus that sends cash payments to this segment of the population, we know that it will not  be enough to keep everyone afloat for the duration of this crisis.

From our homes across the globe, a few BU MBA Class of 2011 alumni decided we wanted to help. Even though it may be small, we needed to do something. And we hope you will join us and share this with all of those in our extended BU family. 

So, what are we doing? We are setting up this fundraiser to support GiveDirectly, a non-profit delivering cash to families impacted by COVID-19 in the U.S.  GiveDirectly is targeting their cash payments to vulnerable households enrolled in SNAP, living in the areas hardest hit by COVID-19.  The organization expects 95% of funding to go directly to recipients, with the remaining 5% covering overhead, salaries, and fees. Each one of us has seen businesses around us that have been devastated by the pandemic and individuals losing their jobs due to the economic fallout. Let's give what we can to put cash in the hands of those who need it most at this time - and make sure we all get through this together.
