Hello & howdy! My name is Casper Oliver (he/they). Mr. Queervallis Pride 2023, queer & disabled artist and activist in rural Oregon. UPDATES MADE:
TL;DR - After 5 different consultations over multiple years, I FINALLY got to have my top surgery. But this surgeon didn't accept insurance, so I need to pay for this out of pocket. We charged $11,090 to our credit cards and are now working to pay off this debt.
I'm a nonbinary trans man who had to go through FIVE attempts to get my top surgery. After getting my health in order, moving from Florida to Oregon, and being fired from a toxic job: I got my top surgery!! Now that I'm recovered, I'm back to performing and looking for a new job.
Financial breakdown is at the bottom of the post! See how the funds will be used by scrolling down.
Little Backstory:
I was supposed to previously get my top surgery down in Florida back in 2020. On top of the pandemic starting up, my first surgeon was not confident in her skills with transgender care, and she had put me on a VERY high HRT dose which was negatively affecting my blood levels. After that surgery date was canceled, I started to work with a surgeon in Miami who was relatively popular on social media for FTM gender affirming surgeries... but we were no longer feeling safe living in Florida, and it also came to light that this particular surgeon had a history of abandoning patients once the surgery was over, so we had to cancel that operation as well. After moving to Oregon and finally getting settled down, I was working with a local plastic surgeon and even got up to the day before the surgery, but anyone who follows my social media likely saw how that didn't pan out well.
My first Oregon surgery date was supposed to be November 17th, but less than 24 hours before the operation we got a call from the clinic to say that they had fired my surgeon and they had to cancel my surgery. This all came after I was fired from my full-time social work job for calling out transphobia and mistreatment in the work place, so I'm still on the hunt for stable income.
My polycule helped me through the trauma of having this necessary operation ripped away from me once again. My wife helped me find a surgeon that could hopefully get us in before the end of the year. We were under the impression that this clinic would take our insurance, but unfortunately that isn't the case.
Every little bit will help as we work to pay this hefty bill off and help us feed ourselves and pay bills during recovery time. Thank you so much. <3
