Cassy & John Shives Family

Cassy & John Shives have lived in Union City for most of their lives. However, they recently decided to open enroll their 4 children in the Ansonia School District, where they have been doing great in the classroom and in athletics. About a year ago, Cassy found out she had a cancerous mass on one of her kidneys and a few nodules on her lungs. She had the kidney removed and was told that the lung nodules were normal and common. Everything was great until November 2023 when her scans showed that the lung nodules were growing. She and John became concerned and found a new team at The James OSU Cancer Hospital After meeting with them, they ordered tests and found that all lung nodules had grown by about 20% by February. On April 11, she had a lung biopsy and the results confirmed that the kidney cancer had spread to her lungs. She has begun radiation and will more than likely need immunotherapy in the future. These treatments require weekly visits to The James Cancer Center and John will be driving her there. This will obviously put a big strain on their family, both financially as well as emotionally.
