MAUI FIRES - ANIMALS CLINGING TO LIFE NEED OUR HELP
8/28/23 This struggling cat was caught and brought to the emergency vet.

8/29/23 Update: "Grey cat went to emergency vet and had surgery. It suffered bad burns and a broken hip. Kitty is a fighter."

(Just one of many who desperately need our help.)

On August 8, 2023, a tragedy struck Maui in three locations. All were hit hard but in Lahaina, fires ripped down the hillside at 80 miles per hour. People who were not immediately notified were faced with the immediate horror of that scene. Many were caught off guard, and died in their homes, in their cars, and on foot trying to flee. News stories relay the death tolls and the names of our community members whose bodies have not yet been recovered. In Lahaina, their loss is felt deeply. We all lost someone important to us and will grieve their loss forever.

Sadly, many pets and other animals did not survive the fire or smoke inhalation either and were overtaken while running away. Like the Pompeii tragedy in AD 79, many animals' bodies were "frozen in time", still standing though they had perished. To make matters worse, pet owners and qualified animal rescuers were forbidden to enter the burn zone to retrieve their pets or any animals stuck inside FOR 20 DAYS! It has been an agonizing wait. Authorities threatened to arrest anyone who tried to get in and as a result, animals who might have been saved also died. It's a heart-breakingly bleak and eerie scene in Lahaina - but there is some good news.

Some animals lived!

Some that survived the fire can not be reunited with their owners and some never had a home to begin with. Many need emergency care and time is not on their side. Fortunately, there is a local 24-hour vet who is available to treat cats and dogs rescued at any time, day or night. But it costs money.

That's where you come in!

We have set up a fund to help cover the costs of vet bills for emergency situations such as the one posted above. Cats are low to the ground and many have been breathing in ash for over 3 weeks. Their bodies are covered in it and they ingest it when licking themselves. Others have suffered from burns, smoke inhalation, severe malnutrition and dehydration. They have held on this long and deserve a fair shot at survival. Your donation will go toward covering medically necessary treatment for these animals - at the only 24-hour vet on the island.

Please help us help them. These are links to some of the nonprofit rescuers supporting this endeavor. 100% of all donations go directly toward providing care for animals affected by the fires.
