John Abbate's Wheelchair Fund
John Abbate is in desperate need of a power assist device made by Max Mobility that attaches to the manual wheelchair so he can be more mobile for everyday life. The cost of this device is $6,000.
I have asked for $7,000 to help offset taxes for the item and for other accessories that he may need to help with his disability while obtaining his goal.
This is John's story. He wanted to be a teacher and he was in his junior year at Indiana University in Bloomington. He slipped on ice one evening and started complaining of headaches. My brother in law advise him to get to the emergency room. What the family thought would be a call from the Bloomington Hospital that John had suffered a concussion turned into a call that he had a benign brain tumor. The doctors stressed surgery was needed to remove the tumor. John had the surgery one week after the diagnosis at Northwestern Hospital in Evanston Il. The surgery was over 8 hours and John was off to a 3 month stay at Rehab Institute of Chicago. John was very determined and worked hard but the surgery left his motor skills severly impaired. Today John's eyesight, speech and breathing have been compromised along with the use of his legs. John our determined head strong nephew will forever be in a wheelchair and need to be careful not to exacerbate his forever medical condition.
We are very proud to say that John continued his therapy and attended classes at Indiana University Northwest to obtain his Bachelor's degree. He was working at Crown Point High School last year when he decided that he would like to continue his education and get his Masters in social work. University of Illinois in Chicago accepted him and for the most part is pretty handicap accessible. The problem is the fatigue John has with wheeling himself around the area and obstacles he really needs the motorized assistance.
It is John's goal to be a self sufficent man. His family and everyone who knows him knows he can do this.
Please help us on our campaign to obtain power assist device made by Max Mobility that attaches to the wheelchair that can change John's life as it relates to his daily struggles.
