Liz’s Heart-Liver Transplant Journey and Recovery

The Journey
My amazing sister Liz entered this world with a rare congenital heart condition called tricuspid atresia. Despite the challenges faced by her life-threatening condition, including open-heart surgery at the age of 6 and again at age 8, she embraced life with a smile that could light up a room. She followed her dream of becoming an elementary school teacher, got married and became the very best fur mommy to her boys Logan and Louie!
However, in August of 2022, at the age of 42, our family received devastating news: Liz's only hope for survival rested on a heart-liver transplant. She was admitted to her local hospital, beginning a journey with uncertainty and challenges. Months passed with countless tests and trials until Liz was transferred to the Cleveland Clinic, where she awaited a double organ transplant, clinging to hope and prayer while maintaining positivity and optimism.
Finally, on August 29th, 2023, after a journey filled with highs and lows, Liz received the miraculous news of a matching donor. The surgeries were successful, but the road to recovery was difficult. Liz spent four months in the ICU before transitioning to a step-down unit for another two months. Through it all, her unwavering spirit and the support of family, friends, and the incredible medical teams at Cleveland encouraged her and she overcame each obstacle one at a time.
Long Road to Recovery
On March 1, 2024, after spending nearly 1 ½ years in hospitals, Liz was granted a second chance at life and was released from the Cleveland Clinic. The joy and relief we felt were indescribable. She truly was a miracle!
While Liz's transplants have granted her a new lease on life, the challenges she faces are far from over. The physical, emotional, and financial toll of her journey weighs heavily on her. Liz had to retire early from her teaching career and as a result her monthly income is now substantially less. At only 44 years old, she had years of work and saving ahead of her, but now her financial future is uncertain as there is no way for her to earn income in the foreseeable future.
Despite having health insurance coverage for the transplants, the financial burden lingers. Countless medical expenses, ongoing treatments, and the need for frequent trips to Cleveland for check-ups impose significant strain. Medications, medical equipment, and copays for essential services are not fully covered, adding to the financial stress.
We humbly ask for your support to alleviate the financial burden on my beautiful, resilient sister. Your donations, no matter the size, will help immensely in Liz's journey to recovery. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers as she continues this path towards healing. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generosity, love, and support.
