Tried By Fire Inc is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization established to assist women who are re-entering society from prison. Our community project presently is providing the answer to the number one barrier confronted once released from prison; housing! When women are released from prison, they are particularly vulnerable to being homeless and unemployed. Statistically, more than 76% of offenders released from prison are re-arrested within five years. Our current project, My Sister's House, is going to serve as the first transitional home for women newly released from prison in New Bern.
Our original plan was to refurbish a property that was donated to us at 524 Roundtree Street. Unfortunately, our plans to repair and renovate the home hit a snag. Due to how the home was built over 80 years ago the concrete footers and spread footings required to meet code today would have required the existing foundation to be removed and replaced. After looking more into this process it became clear that there were serious concerns that the structural integrity of the house would not survive the lifting process. We came to the conclusion that the best solution is to demolish the current house and build a brand new house with a similar architectural design.
While this decision did not come lightly we are choosing to look at it as a positive. Our goal from the beginning was to create a space that will help reduce homelessness and recidivism among post-incarcerated women. Even though the plan has changed we can still meet our goal. We are steadfast and unwavering in our commitment but we need your help. Any donation, no matter the size is getting us one step closer to the opening of My Sister's House.
