“Lil' Bit” of Love for Lauren
Friends and family have come together to support Lauren Swanson and her family through an unexpected chapter in their lives. As of this posting (4/25/20) Lauren is nearly a month into testing, diagnosis, and treatment at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital (Baton Rouge, LA) for kidney damage and high blood pressure caused by Nephrotic Syndrome and a still undiagnosed autoimmune condition (Lupus is the leading candidate).
We call her “Lil Bit” or “Midge” or simply “Lauren”, but God calls her His. She is a vibrant, tenderhearted 14-year-old who is boldly facing this challenge with all the bravery she can muster. She loves her softball and volleyball teams, and she puts her crafting and baking talents to good use showering others with treats. She is persistent and passionate about everything she does, is strong in her faith, and is uniquely built to serve others. After her own home flooded in 2016 and the waters started rising in Houston, Lauren organized a bake sale during lunch at school, raising over $1600 for a flooded middle school in Houston. Now it’s our turn to throw support her way.
Lauren’s been poked and prodded more than most would tolerate, but the hardest medicine to take is missing out on the loving touch from a daddy and sisters who cannot visit (thanks COVID!). Being separated from family and the uncertainty of time is taking a toll on this normally energetic, lively young lady. A special thanks to the amazing team of doctors and nurses who have gone out of their way to keep Lauren’s spirits lifted through the isolation.
Lauren is currently receiving immunotherapy drugs administered by infusion every other week (4 hour sessions) as well as a combination of Steroids, immune suppressors, 2 blood pressure medications, and antacids every 12 hours. Recently an antibiotic was added to ward off possible bacterial infections since her immune system is so low.
Upon release from the hospital, it is projected for the infusions to continue long term every other week and visits with her Rheumatologist. She will also have twice a week labs and visits with her Nephrologist.
While we believe God is more than able to completely heal precious Lauren, we are attempting to assist the family in managing this financial burden. Should this continue as projected, we are aware that battling insurance companies for the needed treatment coverage will become an obstacle.
Please prayerfully consider a donation of any amount to help with the cost of Lauren’s hospital stay, medical bills, future treatments, and ongoing care. A separate bank account has been set aside specifically for the purpose of Lauren’s medical bills. If by God’s grace donations exceed the family’s needs, the balance will be donated to Our Lady of the Lake Foundation, a non-profit 501c charity supporting OLOL Children's Hospital.
