The Story
Rex Maus loved his pets, his classmates at Reagan High in Austin, Texas, his University of Texas Longhorns, the Houston Astros, his children Emily and Melody, and his loving wife, Linda. Rex stayed in touch with many of his Reagan High classmates, who regarded him highly and loved his wit, humor, and kindness. In 2007, he had a life-saving liver transplant, and with the help of St. Luke’s Liver Support Team, his health flourished for the next 16 years, during which he created the entity for Donate Life Houston (DLH), and he put together a band with three other transplant musicians to start the Donate Life Houston Band, which played for the opening of DLH in the Houston Medical Center in 2009. However, he became extremely ill after a kidney biopsy in the summer of 2023, which results showed that he was in acute kidney failure. Soon after the biopsy, he began to have crippling pain in his hands, feet, and jaw, caused by the onset of rheumatoid arthritis and gout. Rex's immune system and health continued to decline, and his wife, Linda, kept a close watch on him. His heart functioned at only 30% by September 2023. Then on September 16, his organs slowly started shutting down. Rex developed a blood clot in his left leg and had to be taken by ambulance to Methodist Hospital. On September 28, he was in the ICU and a code blue was called. The entire staff struggled to revive him, but ultimately, he had to be put on life support. His family was by his side when his body shut down. But his organ donation and transplant experience remains as his legacy continues to spread through the Transplant Community Outreach, a worldwide Facebook site that supports pre- and post-transplant patients and promotes organ donation.
The Ask
We’re writing to ask you to support the Maus family after the loss of their beloved and devoted
husband, caring father and grandfather, avid promoter of organ donation, and wonderful supporter of transplant patients around the world. As the owner of one of the largest transplant sites on Facebook, The Transplant Community Outreach, with over 5,500 members, Rex has counseled many pre- and post-transplant patients, organ donors and recipients—as a larger-than-life 6’8” healthy transplant, serving as a model sign of hope to them for over 15 years. Rex also served on the St. Luke Hospital’s Liver Support Group, helping liver transplant patients throughout their journey. Rex always enjoyed reaching out to his local community with LifeGift and globally using Facebook’s platform to personally help others in their time of need.
Your Donation
Your donation, whether large or small, can help us fund his funeral and services, pay his medical debts for expensive medication that more than tripled as his health continued to decline through the last 5 years. Your donation will go toward relocating Linda, his wife and committed caregiver, for the last 15 years, to Houston near her two daughters so they can provide care for her when needed. It will also make it easier for her to interact with LifeGift and other transplant groups and events, so she can continue Rex's legacy.
The Share
Please help us to share this GoFundMe Rex Maus Memorial Fund link with others, friends, family, church groups, FB groups, or maybe you know someone struggling with facing a transplant or becoming an organ donor, or dealing with a debilitating disease like Chronic Kidney Disease, breast cancer, or RA. Your donation is appreciated by the Maus family from the
bottom of our hearts!
