Help Us Honor the Life and Legacy of Brother Kamau Tyehimba
Join us in celebrating the life and legacy of our cultural warrior, Brother Kamau Tyehimba. Kamau dedicated himself to uplifting Black communities both nationally and internationally. His kindness, intelligence, and unwavering spirit left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Brother Kamau devoted his life to fostering a community of filmmakers who showcased balanced images of Black life throughout the African Diaspora. He understood the profound impact of imagery on our self-perception, believing that stereotypical representations have harmed the Black community in America and around the world. This conviction led him to co-found Reel Black Filmmakers.
Kamau empowered hundreds of students and adults with video production technology, and his work with the Community Film Workshop of Chicago helped mentor the next generation of media makers in underserved neighborhoods.
To honor Kamau’s legacy and his steadfast commitment to the Black film community, we are establishing the Kamau Tyehimba Memorial Scholarship Fund. This scholarship will support an emerging filmmaker who embodies the same passion and dedication that Kamau exemplified throughout his life.
Our goal is to raise $5,000 to provide a scholarship to a deserving filmmaker striving to make a positive impact. Your contributions, no matter the amount, will help us achieve this goal and ensure that Kamau’s legacy continues to inspire future generations.
Thank you for your support, love, and for keeping Kamau’s spirit alive.
With gratitude,
