Rene Emilia (Mitchell) Mills, 57, of Clifton, NJ, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at her home. Born in Suffern, NY, to Walter and Irene (Reyes) Mitchell, she lived in Pennsylvania and Port Jervis, NY before settling in Clifton, NJ two years ago.
Rene was a gifted and celebrated artist, who made a lifelong career as a freelance illustrator. She worked under the name Rene Mitchell-Mills, with one of her most notable accomplishments being featured multiple times in the Hidden Pictures section of Highlights for Children, where her whimsical drawings brought joy to generations of young readers. A graduate of Western Wayne High School, Rene further honed her artistic skills at Pratt Manhattan.
Rene's greatest love and joy came from her family, especially her daughter, Rebecca Bridges, and son-in-law Skyler, of Bothell, WA. Her bond with her family was unbreakable, as was her love for her beloved cats. In fact, she was affectionately known as the "cat thief" in her family, as the cats would always find their way onto her lap. Rene had a special, quiet way with animals that reflected her gentle spirit.
Rene was also a woman of profound faith, holding fast to her beliefs as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses throughout her life. Her faith was a source of strength for her, especially during the long years she battled lupus and other illnesses. Despite the physical challenges she faced, Rene remained a source of light to all who knew her. She was the most kind and loving soul, always gentle with a warm smile and a willingness to brighten the day of those who cared for her. Her spirit of kindness and grace left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Rene is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Bridges & husband Skyler, her mother Irene Mitchell, aunt Mitzy German & husband Fred, aunt Lucette Miles & husband John, Aunt Jody, Aunt Sue, and Uncle Bill, sisters Cinnamon Mitchell, Melissa Wallick, and Nyree Kennison, as well as other extended family members and close friends who will deeply miss her warmth, generosity, and quiet strength.
Rene’s life was a testament to the power of gentle love and enduring faith. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered as a woman who touched the hearts of all she encountered.
