“Having known Charlene through political victories and defeats, through personal tragedies and triumphs, I can say with confidence that she is the person to whom I am most grateful for showing me a life path. I don’t think I have ever known someone as consistent in her values, as collective in her outlook on life, as firm in her trajectory as a freedom fighter.” Those are the words Dr. Angela Y. Davis wrote upon hearing of the death of her mentor, her sister-friend, and her comrade-in struggle, Charlene Mitchell, on December 14, 2022: words we all echoed.

Charlene brought hundreds of us activists - from all over - together into progressive struggle. We learned and grew with her on the political battlefields. We developed enduring friendships and partnerships over delicious meals she suffused with revolutionary love. Many of the most meaningful experiences in our lives were with her or because of her.

The memory of her life is bringing us back together to joyously celebrate her beautiful energy, her unwavering commitment to freedom and socialism, her fierce intelligence, her spirit of personal generosity, and her loyal friendship with all of us on May 13, 2023.
