Five years after his exoneration, Malcolm Alexander still has not received any compensation from the state of Louisiana for the nearly 38 years he was wrongfully incarcerated at Angola prison. Had he never been wrongly convicted, Malcolm could have spent his 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s building his career, earning savings for his family, and would be retired now. Instead, he works two jobs and struggles to make ends meet.
In 1980, at the age of 20, Malcolm Alexander was wrongly convicted of sexual assault and sentenced to serve a life sentence without the possibility of parole at Angola, a former plantation and one of the nation’s harshest prisons. Malcolm spent the next 38 years fighting for his freedom.
Through monthly visits, weekly phone calls, and regular letters, Malcolm shared advice and did his best to instill fundamental fatherhood and leadership qualities in his son, Mac, who was only two years old at the time of Malcolm's trial. These words of wisdom would eventually help Mac raise his own son— Malcolm's grandson— Malcolm III.
On January 30, 2018, after DNA testing conclusively excluded him from crime scene evidence, Malcolm was finally exonerated. Since coming home, Malcolm married the love of his life, and his son’s mother, Brenda. He was also reunited with Inn (short for Innocence), the dog he raised while in prison, and cherishes every minute he gets to spend with Mac, Malcolm III, and the newest addition to the family: his great-grandson, Malcolm IV. And, in 2021, he started his own jewelry business, MBA Handcraft Jewelry.
This Father's Day, we are asking our community to join us in supporting Malcolm, and honoring the great example he has set forth as a father.
