Celebration of Gary Hopkins Jr.'s Life
Donation protected
Gary Hopkins Jr. was an artist, writer, and a full time college student, whose life was taken by the police in 1999. Marion Gray-Hopkins, Gary’s mother, is hosting the first commemoration event after 20 years since his death, with the hope to:
(i) celebrate Gary’s life and achievements,
(ii) bring together families who were affected by state violence locally and nationally to grow the movement against police terrorism, and
(iii) collectively heal through this weekend long event, centering around an artistic ceremony and installation.
The event will take place on October 25 - 26, 2019 in the DMV area (specific time + location TBD), and is called "It Takes a Village" - as frequently quoted by Gary. We are planning to bring at least 20 mothers locally and 20 mothers from out of state, who were affected by police brutality, to advance conversations about healing and movement building. Our evening gala on October 26 will be centered around an artistic installation, which will be referred to as an altar. There will be formal and informal offering sessions at the altar for mothers as well as donors to celebrate and pay respect to Gary.
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO MANIFEST THIS VISION!!!
All money donated will go to planning the entire commemorative event, including the travel and lodging of mothers, programmings for mothers as well as the public dinner gala.
Mothers who have lost their loved ones to police brutality have been at the forefront of the movement against police and state violence. We appreciate any amount of money you can donate!
Please feel free to reach out to Vy Vu at [email redacted] if you have any questions, comments or want to support this event in other ways!
