Help Captain Support send money to friends in prison

Donation protected
Captain Support UK is a collective acting in solidarity with people criminalised and imprisoned for crossing the border. We are very low on funds right now and really need your support!

We are in touch with and supporting around 200 people who have been charged and imprisoned under criminal law, either for arriving or for ‘facilitating the arrival of others’ through piloting the dinghy they travelled in. This number is increasing all the time. Many of those who piloted the dinghy did so under duress and/or because they had no other way of crossing the border to seek safety.

This is just one aspect of the criminalization and persecution of migrants and refugees that has made it illegal for many people to seek asylum in the UK. People who have come to the UK seeking safety are incarcerated in difficult-to-reach prisons with little access to support, legal representation, contact with family, interpretation and basic items such as clothes. Many people that we are in touch with are struggling with their mental health and the effects of isolation and uncertainty, both about their length of sentence, and what will happen next.

The maximum sentence for illegal entry under Section 24 of the amended Immigration Act 1971 is now 4 years. For facilitation (including boat driving), under Section 25, the maximum sentence is life imprisonment.

Captain Support members write letters, visit people in prison and offer practical and social support, depending on what people want and need. We allocate £30 per month to each person we are in touch with. Ideally, we would be able to increase this in future. The funds raised on this crowdfunded will be sent directly to our friends in prison, used to purchase things they need, to cover travel for visits and support CS to keep hosting events.

Here's what your donation can do:

  • £5 - allows us to top up email credit to send letters to people inside and cover the credit for their response
  • £10 - gets stamps to send letters to 10 people
  • £30 - is what CS send monthly to each person in prison who we are supporting - this is used for phonecalls, canteen etc
  • £50 - covers transport for a day visit from London to Elmley prison for CS visitors, family members and friends
  • £100 - helps us host a solidarity letter writing event, covering stamps, materials, food and travel costs for captains and comrades who have been released

If you can donate monthly this would be incredibly helpful, please contact us via email and we will explain the best way to do this.

You can read more about Captain Support, the criminalisation of people on the move and the recent unjust conviction of Ibrahima Bah here: https://captainsupport.net/blog/category/regions/uk/

Please share and donate if you can and help us to stand in solidarity with all people who seek freedom of movement and to resist the combined violence of the UK border regime, racist 'justice' system and prison industrial complex.

If you would like to get involved in Captain Support contact us through this GoFundme or on Twitter (@CaptainSuppUK) or Instagram (@captainsupportuk)

We run regular letter writing events in London, please drop us an email to find out more.
