Help Us Translate Our Free Recipes

Donation protected
Dear reader,

Let me start by thanking you for clicking on the request and taking the time to look at our proposal.

My name is Andy Tous, I'm the co-founder and senior editor at RecetasPuertoRico.com, a puerto rican food recipe website for Spanish speakers.

With your help, I'm seeking to raise $10,000 to hire a local translator in order to translate over 350 recipes (and growing) as means to benefit our English speaking readers.

RecetasPuertoRico.com is a family project that started over 5 years ago as a hobby and with the sole purpose of gathering classic puerto rican food recipes from dusty notebooks and transfering them to digital format. The response from a few friends was so positive that we decided to make a public database.  We are now delivering 100% free food recipes from our immediate family, close friends, well known chefs and followers that have joined us in this great initiative. Our hobby has received a great global response and it has evolved from a weekend project to a daily service.

We offer no hidden fees, paid subscriptions, nor sell (or share) contact lists. We simply provide great, cultural content as a public service.

This is an online service, dedicated to documenting, preserving and sharing the true gastronomic cultures and heritage from the island of Puerto Rico.  Many of our recipes bring back great memories to puerto ricans of all ages.  From the oldest to the youngest, still in the island, moved or deployed somewhere in the world, receiving letters from folks telling us how happy and fund memories our recipes bring them, it's enough to fuel our will to continue.

Since launching our oficial site in late 2013, we have welcomed over 700,000 worldwide visitors and our recipes have been viewed more than 2,000,000 times. We have promoted family friendly, gastronomic events in the US as well as the island of Puerto Rico, completely free of charge by providing advertisement on our blogs and social sites.

Although our recipes and following continue to grow, the fact is that all of our recipes are in Spanish and the number one request we receive is to translate our recipes to English.

We have tried multiple automatic translation engines (which don't really provide the meaning behind our recipes or ingredients) and even went as far as contacting a paid application as a service. None of these really capture the essence of our culture or food recipes.

We do keep our expenses to the very minimum, but the truth is, we personally finance all current expenses and don't really have a budget to include translation services.  This really prevents us from growing and offering our great content and culture to the English speaking audience around the world.

Knowing this limitation, people have reached out and hinted us to charge for the service, sell the recipes or even sell subscriptions. But, although it sounds very easy and tempting, we will never break our primary commitment and promise of delivering free puerto rican recipes.

After much research and consideration, we have decided that the most effective and logical way of achieving this task is by temporarily hiring a translator that knows and understands our culture, ingredients and can deliver true human translations. However, the price per word is simply out of our reach.  Our average recipe contains 300 words and we have over 350 recipes.  Translation services cost us an average of $0.095 ($0.08 minimum) per word.  That is cvery lose, and will probably go over the requested $10,000 very quickly.

Some have approached us and told us, why compete in the recipe business?  We are not trying to compete with anybody, we simply believe we are not only about the recipes, but about our people, culture and community outreach.

With your help and support, we will use the funds to hire and provide temporary employment for a person (or team) to translate our existing recipes from Spanish to English in a quicker, smarter and effective manner.

I hope I can count with your donation to make this project happen.

Sincerely,
Andy Tous, Editor
