On July 17th, 2018 at 3:00pm tears streamed down my parent’s faces as they helplessly watch the home they deeply love burn down into flames. An unforgettable day that our family will never be able to erase as we would wish to.
It began when my parents heard loud noises that seemed to be coming from the side of our backyard. My dad went into the garage and opened the door that led to that side but immediately, smoke and flames rushed in. Fortunately, my dad was able to get away before the flames burst out at him. He yelled and gathered my mom and two younger sisters out of the home. They all escaped to safety yet could only watch in tears as our home fell apart in the flames. As they waited for the rescue team, the fire had already burned nearly half of the home and my parents, helpless, could only pray with their hearts held tight that the fire would spare the remaining. We cannot be thankful enough to the heroes who stood by us that day: the firefighters, neighbors, kind individuals, and our families.
As we look to our ruined home, only the outpours of tears and cries can describe our pain and sorrow. Many of our possessions were damaged and gone away with the home. Nonetheless, our family is most grateful that my parents and sisters escaped because it was them that we couldn’t afford to lose the most.
Our family is now safe and staying at a hotel, but to wake-up everyday knowing that we no longer have a home to turn to, has been very difficult. The continuous purchases and drives around town for food and necessities are compiling and has quickly become a burden for our family. Regardless, we are holding onto each other strong and tight but if you have it in your hearts to help, anything will do: every dollar, any aid, and any words of support are all deeply appreciated. We, the Chang family, sincerely thank you all.
Yours truly,
The Chang Family
