Stonewall Strong

Rick and Ashton Chappell were blessed with handsome baby boy twins on Monday June, 13th at 10:14am. Thier names are Stonewall Frederick Chappell, and Hawkeye Frederick Chappell. Stonewall was born with a serious heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), basically the left side of his heart did not develop and as a result does not work. Over the course of three surgeries his heart will be redesigned converting him to a two chamber heart making it so that his right side will do all of the work. The first surgery was completed on Monday, if all goes well Stonewall will be discharged and they will be trained to care for him at home until he outgrows the surgery he just had. Once he outgrows this first surgery they will return to UVA at about four months old for the second surgery. The third and final surgery will occur somewhere around his third birthday. The Chappells were told to anticipate a 4-5 week NICU/PICU stay during this first surgery/recovery. Rick and Ashton and will be staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Charlottesville and Rick will be commuting back and forth to Henrico once they close Stonewall's chest and take him off of the vent
