HELP CHARIE WITH HER LIFE CHANGING BATTLE
The biggest worry for most of us in life is the safety and wellbeing of the people we love. Worrying about their health and hoping that nothing bad would happen to them. So, when your worst fear becomes a reality, your life changes forever.
If you know Charie Santiago, you know that she is one of the most loving, giving and caring people that you have probably ever met. She is a fun-loving and compassionate person who everyone loves to be around. She is now in the battle of her life, fighting cancer. The emotional and physical impact of this on Charie and her family is unimaginable and overwhelming. It is terrifying. Charie is 38 years old and lives in Whistler, BC with her husband of 18 years, Arthur. She has been healthy her whole life and loves spending time with her family and friends from Canada, the United States and especially her sister, April Ann and niece, Sofia Ann and nephew Yohann from the Philippines. She is an avid crafter and Los Angeles Lakers fan. In her spare time, she volunteers in her community.
Her life changed in August 2018 when she was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer. Charie went through chemo and her body responded well to this treatment at first which helped contain the cancer until these last few months. This is when Charie was dealt with another shocking and devastating setback.
In March 2020, Charie had been experiencing some excruciating back pain. After going through a CT scan, it was discovered that the cancer had returned, this time more aggressive and spreading to both her lungs, pelvic area, skull and spine. She started chemo again as well as radiation to try and shrink the tumor by her spine which was continuing to grow. Unfortunately, the radiation did the opposite and the tumor flared up and damaged her spine. Charie can no longer feel her legs and is now paraplegic.
She now has to go through more chemo and ultimately recuperation, but with the damage to her spine and the cancer spread all over her body, doctors say Charie may only have 6-9 months to live. Devastating news for all of us who love and care for Charie.
The goal is to get Charie stronger to be able to get out of the hospital and spend more time with Arthur and her loved ones. With COVID-19 precautions, Charie has not been able to see family and friends in person while recovering from her surgery which has been difficult.
Adjusting to a new life as a paraplegic will be challenging and demanding. It will affect every aspect of Charie’s life, from needing a wheelchair for her to get around, a modified bed and lift, to an accessible home and vehicle. As Charie and Arthur live in Whistler where there are limited services available, they are looking to relocate to Vancouver to be closer to the hospital to have easier access to more services and the best possible care.
The fear of the unknown with Charie’s health and recovery is an overwhelming burden for her family. Adding financial stress is the last thing they should be focusing on at this time. They are now fighting for borrowed time and it’s important for Charie and her loved ones to focus on being together. Charie’s hope is to have her sister and niece come to Canada to spend precious time together while she is still healthy to do so.
This campaign is to raise funds to give Charie the best care possible and alleviate financial worries during the months ahead. If you know Charie , she is the kind of person that would give her last penny to anyone in need . Having to see someone who is such a positive light and great friend to all experience this is difficult for her friends, family, and community. Lets do our best to help in these dire times of need .
We understand that everyone is going through difficult times at the moment due to the global pandemic, but there is no amount too small. Every little bit helps. If you can support, any donation would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
