Charles T. Mangrum II, longtime resident of Pinecrest, Florida, and professor in education at the University of Miami, passed away on July 8th, 2023. Charles, known as Chuck, was an amazing father, husband, grandfather, teacher, professor, and mentor. Born in Chicago, he earned a B.S. in sociology and M.S. in education from Northern Michigan University and his Ed.D. in reading education from Indiana University. Charles joined the University of Miami in 1969 as a professor of learning disabilities and retired after 34 years of service. Dr. Mangrum taught in the classroom and become a well-respected reading educator, serving as president of the Florida Reading Association, and working with many school districts to develop programs for students with disabilities. During his time at the University of Miami, Charles maintained a private practice evaluating and advocating for the needs of students with learning and reading disabilities. He published over 250 books, becoming a nationally recognized authority on the topic of reading and learning disabilities. Chuck loved the Miami Hurricanes and the community of people he worked with on campus. Many Saturdays he could be found at football games or baseball games chatting with friends. When he wasn’t on campus, he was traveling or boating with his wife (Jane) and children (Mykel and Mark).
Jane D. Mangrum passed away on March 17, 2020. Due to Covid restrictions, a celebration of her life was postponed. The remembrance of Chuck would not be complete without also honoring the impact Jane had on her friends and family. Jane was born in Michigan and followed Chuck to Miami in 1969, where she nurtured two children and countless new faculty and doctoral students. She built connections through the Women’s Group to foster a sense of belonging among the wives of faculty members and neighbors. She always welcomed newcomers into her home and greeted them with a meal. If you left hungry, it was your fault. Jane had a successful career in Business Technology at Miami Dade College, where she served as the department chairperson. At the urging of Charles, she retired in 1999 and together they traveled, spending time with family and enjoying Lake Lure. Jane’s hospitality and love of entertaining was enjoyed by many. If you were one of the lucky guests, you tasted her famous lasagna at one of Mark’s Lobster parties. Chuck and Jane were always present in the lives of family, neighbors, and friends here in Miami and at their summer home in Lake Lure, N.C. A private viewing took place on March 25, 2020, with immediate family.
Chuck and Jane leave behind a legacy in education, which their two children continue. In honor of their devotion to education, we established a fund to support students with disabilities. The family asks that in lieu of flowers or food, you consider a donation to continue their work in education. All donations will go directly to helping students at either the University of Miami or Miami Dade College, just as Chuck and Jane wanted.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 15th, 10am - 12pm.
