Charlie's Leukemia Fund

Donation protected

It really is surreal that I am even writing this. Those of you that know me, or my love Charlie, know that we don't ask for help from others. We help others. Let me give you a little background about what Charlie is going through.
Charlie is the most good hearted, caring person you ever want to meet. Everyone who has ever met him falls in love with him just like I did. He runs races for charity. He had lived a hard life until we met almost 4 years ago, but things were looking up. He was so happy, working 12 hours a day most days, working out at the YMCA and helping other work out at Planet Fitness. In all the time I have known him he has never complained about anything (really). We have never had a disagreeement or harsh word.
In July, Charlie started to complain a little about being dizzy when he would stand up quickly. I thought he had gotten water in his ear or he had vertigo. I blew it off as nothing. In July, he donated blood as he has many, many times and it was fine. At the end of July his company did their routine blood screening. His blood work was mailed to us and it had some highs and lows. I didn't know what it meant so I told him to take the results and go to the doctor to get his ear washed out thinking it would help his dizzy spells. The Dr. noticed that his hemoglobin was low but thought it was because he had donated blood. She took blood on that Monday Aug. 3 and said the cells looks great but the hemoglobin was still low. So on Thursday she took it again and it came back Friday with leukemia cells. They started to call us midday on Friday Aug. 7 saying he needed to go straight to the hospital. It was not an hour later that he had a bone marrow test and found out for sure on Sat. that he had Acute Myeloid Leukemia. It was a long weekend of soul searching and coming to terms with your own mortality. On Monday Aug. 10, he was admited to Memorial for a month to get constant chemo, blood transfusions, platlets, etc...
As you can see from the pictures he is in great spirits, works out everyday in the hospital and inspires everyone, but this is a scary road. He has a 30% of living if he doesn't get a bone marrow transplant in Nashville. He does have insurance for now but will have to resign his job eventually then will have none. We will have to travel to Nashville to have a week long assessment in the near future. This involves travel, food, copays etc... The out of pocket so far for insurance copays is about $10,000.
To get a bone marrow he really needed to have a sibling but his sister died in a car wreck years ago. His mother died just 2 months ago from choking. It has been a hard road. If they can find him a match it will mean many months in the hospital and living in Nashville for more than 100 days. Charlie needs funds for living expense such as food, a place to stay, medication etc.... Someone has to stay with him 24/7 for the entire time. We are not even sure how this will work yet but we know we will need help emotional and financially as I am the only one supporting us right now. He wants to live and wants to do the transplant. If you can find it in your heart to help him he would be forever grateful. Thanks so much from us to you!
