UPDATE - 07/06/23 SURGERY DAY! Today went much better than anticipated. Thank you, Jesus! First off, her bloodwork looked great. No clotting or blood issues, so that was not the reason for the excessive bleeding during the last surgery. The surgery started around 1 p/m. Both surgeons called at 5 p/m to say they had completed the surgery, Charolette was no longer intubated, and she was breathing on her own but not fully awake. The primary surgeon said they were very surprised to find that they could go directly to the infected area, and she seemed confident that they were able to get all of the infected tissue. They did culture the bulla and those results will be back early next week. There was very little bleeding, which was also another pleasant surprise. We received another call at 6:30 letting us know that she was awake, blinking, and had no signs yet of facial paralysis. Charolette is on pain and anti-inflammatory meds, as well as antibiotics. We will get another call tomorrow morning letting us know how her night went and when they anticipate she could be discharged. We are thankful for the entire team who have worked with Charolette at WSU. They have communicated with us every step of the way, and we feel like Charolette has truly received the best care possible. Her primary surgeon, Dr. Owens, and Dr. Hotmann the assisting surgeon, have been wonderful. We are feeling optimistic for the first time in a long time. We appreciate each and every one of you for loving Big Yeasty, for being her cheerleader, and for making this second surgery possible. We are beyond grateful. With Much Love, Big Yeasty's People #BigYeasty #YeastyStrong #WSUVetHospital #GoCougs #YouCantKeepBigGirlDown #BiggerAndBetterThanEver UPDATE - 07/05/23 Charolette spent the entire day at WSU. Her CAT scan pretty much confirmed the worst-case scenario. It showed infection and inflammation throughout her entire ear. The surgeon suspects she may have an abscess in there that may also be contributing to the problem. Charolette is that very small percentage who still have issues after the TECA-BO surgery. The surgeon said she has seen dogs who have never achieved being infection free in their ear even after having this surgery several times. So, we drop Charolette off tomorrow at 8 a/m. She will get blood work done in the morning and her surgery is scheduled for sometime in the afternoon. The surgeon did say this surgery will unfortunately be more invasive than the last b/c there is no ear canal that leads them to where they need to go. They will insert a catheter as far as it will go into the small opening that is still in her ear and will follow that path as far as it will take them, and that will be their starting point. The surgeon said she cant tell at this point if the last surgeon screwed up, or if its just the severity of the infection that Charolette has. Charolette will spend the night in the ICU and they will assess her Friday to determine if shes ok for discharge, or if she needs to stay longer. Things they look for are if she can take oral meds, is peeing and drinking ok, her level of pain, or if Charolette is showing any signs of facial paralysis. (Theres always the risk of hitting that facial nerve during this surgery). Charolette is exhausted from today. She barely ate any dinner. She’s sound asleep now and I know she’s not going to be easy to wake up in the morning. We want to thank all of you, again, for the ongoing outreach of support, love, and encouragement. If you could please continue to keep Big Yeasty in your thoughts and prayers. I am a firm believer of the power of prayer. #BigYeasty #YeastyStrong #ThePowerOfPrayer #WSUVetHospital PS: Here are a few pics from our trip to far. I have a video of her running down the hotel hallway making a b-line for a grassy area outside, but it wont load so i will need to post that separately. PSS: Charolette is holding strong at 78.6 lbs!!! Quite the skinny mini! UPDATE - 07/02/23 Thank you, EVERYONE, for your tremendous support and generosity. Charolette's GoFundMe exceeded the goal!!!!!! This is so amazing! The burden that financially has been lifted off of us is such a blessing. We are excited AND nervous about what lies ahead this week regarding Charolette's surgery, but I no longer have to worry about how, or if, we can pay for it. We are beyond grateful. I will be sending an update Wednesday evening with how the testing went, and what the WSU surgery team anticipates the severity of the surgery will be that is scheduled for the next day. Then I will send another update Thursday evening with how the surgery went, and how Charolette is doing. We would appreciate continued prayer for Charolette, and what the next week holds in store for her. With Much Love, Big Yeasty's People Update - 06/25/23 Thank you, everyone, for your continued support! We can't believe that we are so close to reaching our goal! Charolette's breeder, Houndful Hearts, has generously offered to send a Houndful Hearts Kid bandana to anyone who makes a $25 donation, and a Houndful Hearts bag to anyone who makes a $50 donation. Thank you, Kyla and Maggie at Houndful Hearts, for everything! Charolette has her surgery at Washington State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in (10) days. WSU is one of the best veterinary medical programs in the country and we are so grateful that the amazing basset hound community has given Charolette this opportunity to be treated there. Thank you again, for all of the support! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I have increased the goal b/c we received the results from last week's ear culture and sensitivity test and it confirms that she has a deep tissue infection, as we suspected, in her right ear. This will most likely require more invasive surgery, which is more expensive. The less invasive surgery estimate was 2k-3k. The more invasive surgery estimate was 4k-6k. These estimates do not include the pre-surgery diagnostic testing and our consultation w/ the WSU medical team. The ear culture from last week also confirmed that Charolette's left ear is now infected. Her veterinarian started her on one medication last week, and she will be starting a second medication by the end of this week. This second medication needs to be made up specifically for her b/c of her resistance to most medications. Thank you again, for all of the support! There is something so special about Basset Hounds, and their people. I have been w/ Charolette walking through a parking lot, and a lady almost ran over a curb AND hit a light pole b/c she was so excited to see a REAL basset hound in person for the first time. She could hardly get her van in 'park' before jumping out to greet Charolette. The basset hound community is an AMAZING group of people who are instantly bonded solely b/c of their love of basset hounds. Thank you so much for loving Charolette and for helping us make this surgery possible. She had surgery on her ear last March, but unfortunately, this was not successful. She was referred to Washington State University a month ago. They called last Wednesday to say that they had agreed to take Charolette on a patient, and she was scheduled for surgery on 07/06/23, w/ a CAT scan and other diagnostic testing scheduled for 07/05/23. In just two days nearly $3600 has been donated to Charolette's GoFundMe. The WSU estimate was up to $7500. We are excited to say her fund is nearly halfway there! Big Yeasty and her people send their love and deepest gratitude. #BigYeasty #YeastyStrong #BigIsBeautiful #GoBigOrGoHome #BassetHoundLove Original Post - 06/17/23 Hello! My name is Charolette, but most of you know me as Big Yeasty. I am a six-and-a-half-year-old Bassett Hound, and I have been fighting chronic ear infections most of my life. After years of visiting different vets, and a Dermatologist, having to deal w/ tons of tests and trying every medication there is, there was no other option but to have the TECA-BO surgery, which I had on 03/20/23. This is a very invasive surgery, where everything inside my ear was removed and in theory, it was supposed to include all of the infected area. I did not do well with this surgery. I had many complications, and for reasons unknown, I still have my ear infection. I was referred to Washington State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, which is five hours from my home because my veterinarian and Dermatologist believe this is where I can get the best treatment. I am currently scheduled for bloodwork, a CAT scan, and other testing, on July 5th. My people will be meeting w/ the medical team that same day for my surgery consultation. My surgery is scheduled for the next day, July 6th. The estimated cost for the July 5th appointment is $1,000-$1,500, and the estimated cost for surgery is $2,000 - $6,000. If the testing and medical team determine that the infection is not that deep and could be treated with antibiotic beads being inserted inside my ear, this is less invasive, which would be the lower end of the estimate, 2k-3k. If the testing determines that the infection is still deep inside my ear, or if the drainage track left from my last surgery is infected, then that is a more invasive surgery. That is estimated at 4k-6k. B/c of all of the complications I experienced after my last surgery, I will be staying in the ICU for several days to ensure that my medical team can be there in case I have complications again. I am not excited to have this surgery b/c it was so hard and painful last time, but I am tired of always feeling sick and having this chronic pain. My people love me and want to get me the best treatment there is, but they have spent all of their money on my last surgery and even maxed out their credit card to pay for the surgery and all of the aftercare I had to have. My people did apply for a scholarship that the teaching hospital has, and I am very grateful that I have been awarded a $175.00 scholarship toward my surgery. The total estimated cost of my treatment at WSU is between $3,000 - $7,500. I know my people don't have the money for this, so I am praying that they can get some help. I only have a couple of weeks to try and raise enough money for my surgery. I know times are hard right now, and most folks don't have enough to take care of their own, let alone try to help a basset hound. But if there is anyone out there who is in a position to help in any way possible I would be overjoyed, and so would my people. Thank you for taking the time to read my story. With Much Love, Charolette aka Big Yeasty
