Cheryl Hoyt Flood Relief Fund

In August 2016, southern Louisiana suffered devastating floods which left 150,000 homes unlivable and countless thousands of vehicles unusable. One of those folks who was robbed of a very important mode of transportation was Cheryl Hoyt. Her van was destroyed which contained a brand new motorized scooter along with many art supplies.

I have known Cheryl for close to 20 years. She is a remarkably independent woman and a good person... And my personal hero. She has had vehicles outfitted for her needs and drives from Zachary, LA, to paint with a group at the Louisiana Art And Artists’ Guild in Baton Rouge, some 20 miles away every Wednesday. She loves to paint and her art is sought after by many.

To give you a little history, in the winter of 1986, her life changed dramatically when she contracted pneumococcal pneumonia. Subsequently, she had to have amputations of her arms and legs and was no longer able to earn a living. Her brother and his wife kept her son for 6 months and her daughter stayed at the house during the day and with a family friend on the next street at night.

Cheryl said, “From the time I went in the hospital until I got out, July 31, I was there seven and a half months. I think they would have kept me longer, but I told them I was going home July 4. They told me I couldn’t, they had something else they had to do. I said, ‘Then I’m going home the end of July, whether it’s done or not.’ And I did. I was ready to get out of there.”

Following extensive physical therapy, Cheryl began to rebuild her life. She saw an art instructor on T.V. who said, “Anyone can learn to paint”. She sent her daughter to the store for watercolor paints and the rest is history. Outside of attending various workshops facilitated by Louisiana artists, Cheryl is a self-taught artist. Her work has been exhibited all over the state. Cheryl has been painting with the A.C. Lewis Art Colony for 5 years and is a member of the Louisiana Art And Artists’ Guild.

Cheryl’s determination, courage, and trust in the Lord in pursuit of her craft, are a tremendous inspiration to all who know her.

Let's help Cheryl raise these funds for a new van with a wheelchair lift and a new motorized scooter so she can continue to be independent.
