Chicago Community Fridge

Donation protected
Community fridges have been popping up across the US the past few months, but have been notably absent from Chicago. We are trying to change that! We are going to install a community fridge in the west side of Chicago, but need some help to cover the costs.

What is a community fridge? A community fridge is a well-stocked fridge in a public area that is accessible to anyone who needs it. Community members are welcome to put any food into it or take any food out of it, making it so that it not only is feeding the community but helping cut down on food waste and establishing a culture of collective responsibility and care.

Why are community fridges important? Community fridges are not charity, but acts of solidarity and mutual aid! We hope that having this institution in our community will get food to those who need it but will also demonstrate the power that people have to imagine a better future together. In a more concrete sense, though, the unhoused population in Chicago is skyrocketing, and along with it the number of people who do not have a reliable source of food. With the COVID-19 pandemic, its has caused thousands of residents to lose their jobs and, in turn, the income that allows them to put food on the plates of themselves and their families.

The money raised in this fundraiser will go toward purchasing, moving and installing the fridge, supplies to build and decorate a protective shed, electricity costs, cleaning products to keep it sanitary and more. Anything raised beyond our need will be used to fill the fridge with more foods and fresh produce.

Everybody deserves to eat.
