ChiFresh Kitchen Co-op -- feeding our community

Donation protected
This spring, five formerly incarcerated worker-owners in Chicago started ChiFresh Kitchen, a cooperatively -owned food service contracting business.

We make food from the heart and believe in our own ability to feed our communities. We plan to contract with schools, after school programs, churches, nursing homes, nonprofits, and more. Even though we were planning to launch later in the year, we got started in the middle of this pandemic in order to provide our members secure, safe employment and to feed people who are struggling right now.

We have a partnership with Urban Growers Collective  - a collective of Black-owned urban farms in the Chicagoland area.  Through this partnership, we are currently making 1,000 meals per week to feed folks dealing with food insecurity on the South and West sides of the City, and every one of our meals has produce from Black-owned farms.  But we could be doing so much more - we get requests daily for more meals.

These funds will support us to provide more meals to folks facing food insecurity,  and to help purchase a kitchen space that we own.

We appreciate any support you can provide! You are helping us build the foundation for a better food system in Chicago and also paving the way for a whole new economic system that centers the needs of our communities.

THANK YOU!

The first 200 people to donate $50 or more get a limited-edition ChiFresh t-shirt designed by our worker-owner Sarah Stadtfeld.

Shirts are now sold out. Thank you everyone!

Formerly Incarcerated Women Launch Worker Owned Food Business During COVID19

"Last Friday, with her car in the shop, Edrinna Bryant woke up and called Kimberly Britt to ask for a ride into work. It was the first day that they would be serving meals to folks as ChiFresh Kitchen, a new worker-owned commercial kitchen cooperative on the West Side of Chicago.

“We were so excited about the fact we were going to cook our first meal together and people can taste it,” Bryant says. “That’s so exciting to me as a young black mom who was incarcerated. For my child to know that his mom was in a situation that felt like the end of the world and look at her now.”
