I am Abeba Weldegebriel, Director for Anenitigray Development Services (ADS) in the Diaspora
About Us:
Anenitigray Development Services (ADS) is a not-for-profit organization based in Tigray,
Ethiopia aimed to support conflict affected vulnerable communities through emergency relief support and
developmental livelihood programs. While we officially incorporated in February 2023, we have been
facilitating food support services in drought affected area of Tigray for children, women, and elders.
Fundraising Goals
Anenitigray Development Services (ADS) started a fundraiser which aims to reduce starving
deaths of children in four districts of Tigray region, Ethiopia.
We have a short and long term to relieve and resolve the adverse effect of the crisis on the children in the region.
The short term project consists in:
▪ Assist food and nutrition support for starving children in Tigray, Ethiopia
▪ Assist with medicine, medical services, medical equipments
Mengsh Bahreslassie, nutrition coordinator at the bureau, told Addis Standard that acute malnutrition of children in Tigray is sharply increasing mainly due to the ongoing suspension of
huma aid.
“Children, especially those who are under five need nutritious foods such as fruits and dairy
products,” Mengsh said, adding that in Tigray “children are dying from lack of such foods”.
"I lost my two newborn babies due to hunger," a grief-stricken Abeba sorrowfully told Addis
Standard, her voice laden with immeasurable anguish. Abeba's infants are among the hundreds of
under five children died of acute malnutrition in Tigray, amidst worsening humanitarian situation
in the region, mainly due to the ongoing suspension of humanitarian aid.
UNICEF spokesman James Elder told reporters Friday in Geneva the region is on the brink of
famine, adding that, without immediate assistance, Tigray will face a crisis not seen in a decade.
“We are seeing more and more young children and babies slide dangerously close to sickness
and potential death from malnutrition, so we have rung alarm bells and alarm bells and here we
are now,” he said. “We now have the largest number of people classified as food-insecure in a
decade since Somalia. And, as I say that, [there is the] very real risk of deaths of tens of
thousands of children.”
In April 2023, the United Nations’ World Food Program (WFP) announced that it would
temporarily suspend food aid in Tigray. The decision came amid reports of food
Misappropriation.
Dozens of women and children queue inside a humanitarian aid center in Tigray to receive soup to treat
child malnutrition. Tigray, one of the bloodiest wars of the 21st century, has left at least 600,000 dead in
two years, and now civilians continue to starve due to food scarcity.
