Every year 3.2 million deaths occur due to household air pollution—237,000 of those are children. Household air pollution in Africa, largely caused by indoor cooking fires, is responsible for more deaths than AIDS and Malaria combined!

We have developed a simple, effective chimney design that can be manufactured locally and distributed via a social franchise model—giving local communities the skills and confidence to make their own chimneys.

Last year we travelled to Tanzania and Kenya to test the chimney—once installed, our first recipient, Mumma Walter, was able to use it without any instructions or explanation. At our six month checkin, she is still using the chimney and suggested we develop a bigger version as well to be used when cooking for community functions.

This year we will return to scale the project, living in communities—spending time listening—we want to make sure that the chimney is suited to their community and implemented in a sustainable way.

We need your support to help distribute this chimney design through Africa to enable impact at scale through local communities.

How much does a chimney cost?

$50—the cost of making a single chimney locally (this cost will reduce over time with economies of scale)
$100—enables a mother and a daughter to have a chimney each (especially important in communal living arrangments)
$200—enables a school or community organisation to have 4 chimneys or two large models for cooking for groups of people
$325—the cost of installing a pilot chimney (to enable us to see if there is local appetite for the solution and begin the search for a local franchisee). This covers community consultation, local R&D, Air Monitoring evaluation and a feedback loop
$6,500—Establishing a Local Chimney Social Franchise. This covers knowledge and training transfer, tools and equipment (including a chimney stencil) and marketing and distribution support. Included are the cost of 20 chimneys to enable the kickstarting of the social franchise.
