Chiswick House Garden: 300 years
Donation protected
This is David Jacques, the garden historian, and I am raising funds towards the publication of Chiswick House Gardens: 300 years of creation and re-creation.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am requesting a pre-publication subscription of £30 or more + £3 for postage.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You may know of my Georgian Gardens, The Gardens of William and Mary, The Career of Christopher Tunnard and Gardens of Court and Country. This one on Chiswick is the culmination of 35 years commitment and research as consultant, inspector and trustee.
It examines especially the times when the gardens were at the forefront of debates on creation and restoration (Burlington's time including the origin of the landscape garden, Duchess Georgiana and the 6th Duke when rosaries and parterres were reintroduced, the first serious attempt at garden restoration by the Ministry of Works in the 1950s, and being one of the premier restorations funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund in the 2000s).
The reason for this crowd-funding approach is that it will be published by a non-profit academic press (Liverpool University Press) which likes to ensure that its costs are covered, and so seeks pre-publication commitments.
I am raising subscriptions to this end, and every donor of £30 or more will receive a copy and be thanked within the book (rrp £40). And by me now. All being well, publication will be later this year.
