Help our Trans activist comrade w bail & housing

Hi friends, 

Our comrade Nikki is in urgent need of funding to help her and her partner Maria get through a stressful and traumatizing event. 

On January 9th, 2021, violent far-right extremists and hate group affiliates gathered at the Pacific Beach boardwalk to promote conspiracy theories about the presidential election. Leftist activists organized a counter-protest to protect community members and to send the message that neo-fascist hate groups are not welcome in PB. Throughout the day, far-right extremists were observed and photographed threatening people with knives and mace. One was photographed deploying a smoke grenade, and another group of them seriously injured a counter-protestor by beating him with fists and a metal baton. This video showcases some of the violence they enacted:link .  The police stood passively by and allowed the right-wingers to continue terrorizing the community until leftist activists were finally able to force them out. No right wingers have ever been charged or arrested for their dangerous and violent actions. Leftist activists came to protect the community- the police came to protect property. 

In December of 2021-nearly a year after this incident- SDPD raided the homes of 9 leftist activists, taking their possessions and hitting them with outrageous, devastating charges. On January 30th, Nikki became the 10th activist to be targeted. She was taken from her home in Mexico and has been locked away since. Her partner Maria has been working tirelessly to advocate for her, but Nikki’s incarceration has left them in a dire financial situation. Maria needs to raise $400 by January 18th in order to avoid being evicted from the home that they share with Nikki. Maria and Nikki are requesting funds to help them secure stable, long-term housing while they continue fighting for Nikki’s freedom. 

Nikki is being treated cruelly in custody. She is being held in a men’s facility, which is an enormous safety concern. The jail is also a hotbed for Covid and Nikki has already had at least one exposure while in custody. They have been keeping her isolated, denying her in-person and video visits with loved ones. In addition to endangering Nikki and turning her life upside down, the courts have imposed an excessive bail amount of $325,000. 

We are hoping that Nikki’s bail will be reduced on her next court date. For now, our fundraising goal is set at $40,000. This amount will help Nikki cover some legal support and living expenses while she continues to move through this ordeal. 

Leftist activists in San Diego are being targeted by District Attorney Summer Stephan’s campaign to impose the harshest possible punishment on people who oppose authoritarianism and far-right extremism. Stephan has previously been criticized for publishing anti-Semitic conspiracy theories also promoted by Qanon on her campaign website.   In the criminal complaint regarding January 9th, 2021, Stephan made criminal accusations against activists for doing such activities as “putting on black clothing”. We cannot allow Summer Stephan to abuse her power and exploit the justice system as an act of retaliation against activists.
