Chocolate Milk Mommies

Since our very first interview with Yahoo!, we have blossomed into a large group, reaching and inspiring women all over the world. We’ve hosted a Community Baby Shower, visited new moms in the hospital to provide lactation support, organized play dates and spend countless hours responding to local moms about breastfeeding difficulties through social media, email and personal means of communication. We’ve since realized that we want to offer more to the women we serve.

Chocolate Milk Mommies’ goal is to reach as many women as we can, in low-income areas, to bring resources they would otherwise have no access to. Not only are breastfeeding initiation and continuation rates 3x lower for black women but we are also more likely to die during childbirth. We want to provide the proper resources and necessary education in order to reduce and possibly eliminate these health disparities. In more ways than one, childbirth is killing black women and not breastfeeding leads to chronic diseases that affect us even into adulthood. Our ultimate goal is to bring the first birth center to the state of Alabama.

All of our founders currently serve the community through employment. Angel is a Home Health Nurse, Rauslyn- state certified Social Worker, Sacorya is a Certified Nursing Assistant, Charity is a Public Safety Dispatcher, Jennifer is a DONA approved trained Doula, and Elyce helps many women, especially new moms reach their postbaby fitness goals as an It Works! distributor. We all work together to provide resources for the community but at this time, we’ve reached a financial snag which has left us unable to apply for 501(c)(3) status. We are working with an attorney who has so graciously discounted her services in order to file the proper paperwork for us but even with the discount, raising kids, giving back to the community, organizing play dates and providing community outreach while working full time jobs and being full time students, we are simply unable to afford it.

With YOUR help, we would be able to pay the attorney fees and cover the expenses towards certifications so that two of us can provide evidenced based resources, as Certified Lactation Consultants, to the families in our community. Your donations would be distributed as follows:

*Legal fees for non-profit status- $1000
*The Healthy Children's Project's Certified Lacation Consultant training for 2- $1000
*Books and materials needed for training (x2)- $500
