My grandson Christopher Carter is in his final semester at UCF aerospace engineering and was suppose to graduate in May.
Chris was driving his motorcycle at 11PM Tuesday 2/21/23, going the speed limit wearing a full face helmet when he approached an intersection where he had the green light. There was a Prius in the opposing left turn lane that was stopped. As Christopher approached the intersection the Prius pulled right out in front of him and stopped. Chris impacted the passenger door with the side of his helmet. The damage that he suffered was from inside the helmet…I don’t think he would be alive if he was not wearing one or did not have a full face helmet.
He was operated on Wednesday night and the plastic surgeon said they had to rebuild his left jaw and cheekbone. His jaw will be wired shut for about 6 weeks. They also had to install a tracheotomy tube to allow for air because of the swelling. This will need to be in place also for about 6 weeks. His trauma team came in today and said that the bleeding from his ears probably means there was some other damage. Chris had a question about all the blood in his ears and they said it was due to all the fractures and that they would heal up.
I asked Chris if he had any insurance through school or his internship and he does not have any health coverage at all. The hospital said they would work to look for grants and other ways to reduce the bills. He will also have some significant dental work that will be needed once he heals up.
The Prius insurance coverage is undetermined as of today but it will be months or years before Chris would see anything if they are covered.
