In the late evening of November 20th, 2014 my brother Chris Stigas, fell in the bathroom of his apartment where he lived alone and suffered a traumatic high level spinal cord injury.
Chris fell backwards and broke his neck on the bathtub faucet and instantly could not move any part of his body.
He spent 10 - 12 hours alone with a blocked airway, until he was found and rescued in the early afternoon the next day. Upon being rushed to hospital, he underwent 6 hours of decompression surgery and 10 permanent titanium rods now support his neck.
Unfortunately, as a result of the severity of his injuries he was paralyzed from the shoulders down and is now quadriplegic.
Chris fought valiantly for his life and remained on life support for over 10 weeks in the ICU at Toronto Western Hospital. Through his courage and bravery he was able to regain strength in his lungs and by early March was transferred to a rehab hospital where he has worked diligently and endured many hours of physical therapy to regain as much functionality and strength as possible.
Throughout this journey, Chris has showed true courage, determination and has exhibited unwaivering faith. He has been a true inspiration and his strength, spirit and sense of humour have been a beacon of hope for all of our family, most of all me.
I'm happy to report that Chris is now breathing on his own, he is almost entirely medication free and has now transition to a wheelchair. A huge breakthrough that will give him more independence and mobility.
Chris needs a specialized wheelchair that costs upwards of $14,000 CAD and our health care system does not provide the funding.
That's why I'm reaching out to our community to help cover the cost of his wheelchair and other highly specialized equipment that he will need to help him live independently.
