I watched as Dan, my brother-in-law of fifteen years.. just sat there quietly. He refused to leave my sisters side the entire time. He was trying to be strong and hold it all together… but he was defeated, you could see it in his eyes. Not only that… Dan is the “Man with a plan” type of guy. He’s always prepared for what’s ahead and this was unexpected to say the least…
On July 31st 2021, my sister, Christina Burnside-Coughlin was in what the Sheriff dubbed as a “Freak Accident”.
She spent weeks in the ICU unconscious while they rotated surgeries to put her back together. Fortunately she did wake up.. but the journey hasn’t been easy. She’s now in and out of therapy both mental and physical. She still has at least three more surgeries ahead of her. My sister also suffered a brain injury on top of everything. I noticed a lot of changes in her and her personality. I watched my big sister with this lively personality and this big giving and loving heart… still be so giving and loving.. but she lost her spark and has been trying to find it ever since. She’s depressed and feels hopeless. She’ll call me and say “it’s a bad day and I can’t do this anymore.” It’s weird for me because I’ve always been the one who needed help.
Since the end of July, I’ve been watching my sister Christina, struggle for her life and trying to find a new normal. She’s currently waiting for a cadaver match for one of her next upcoming surgeries. Shes home but has a long road of recovery ahead. She has a home health aid come in and help her out of bed and with bathing while my brother-in-law works.
I’ve also been watching my brother-in-law Dan, work overtime to help account for my sisters now missing wages and pay for the endless medical bills that are piling up. Not only that he comes home every night to take care of his wife and kids. By that I mean dinner, laundry, cleaning, homework, house maintenance. He’s playing both roles while my sister recovers. She does have a nurse come in and help her out of bed and with showering and bathing.
You guys know.. since the hospital had to call in an out of network specialist to help save my sisters life.. the insurance company “can’t cover it”. Which left my sisters family with yet another huge medical bill.
My sister called me crying the other day because they need to come up with another $10,000 before they will preform one of the surgeries she needs. Christina and Dan are not the type of people to ever ask for help.. from anyone. They are both too proud and very hard workers. They worked their asses off for everything they have.. and in one split second they lost their entire life savings.
Even if you can’t help financially.. please help by sharing this or by dropping by to visit my sister. She’s been depressed and lonely. OR help out Dan by dropping off dinner. Thank you guys. Please share this!!
I will update with upcoming surgeries and pst surgeries when I get a chance.
