Chromebooks for DCPS Bioethics Course

Hello Generous Donors,
My name is Joshua Hurley-Bruno and I am a teacher and instructional coach at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Washington, DC. As a public school educator for the past 20 years, I have developed the knowledge and experience to craft transformative learning experiences for our students. Roosevelt serves a diverse group of students all of whom receive free/reduced lunch. We are working hard to create a community school serving all of our students. Recently, DC Schools accepted my proposal to teach Bioethics this year. It is the only course of this kind offered in the district. I have a course roster of 20 juniors and seniors who have all earned a minimum of an 80% average in Biology and Chemistry. I am elated to engage these students in exploration and debate of the bioethical issues that face our community and world today. We will be working with faculty and students at Georgetown University and are planning quarterly field trips to their courses.
In order to facilitate the level of research, collaboration, writing and presentation we intend; student access to 1:1 technology is essential. I have found chromebooks on amazon which total to $265 each. These will allow students for several years to access the existing body of research, communicate with ‘mentors’ enrolled in college Bioethics courses, craft fully sourced informational and argumentative writing and create multimedia presentations. Twenty of these chromebooks totals at $5300 and would be an invaluable resource used daily by my students.
We are trying to ‘hit the ground running’ with an exploration of Bioethical foundations beginning August 26th, 2019. Your contribution will truly help public school students, many of whom have suffered varying levels of trauma and adversity. This course will engage them in research and debate relevant to their lives and set them up with the skills necessary for college level reading, writing and speaking.
THANK YOU!!!
