CHS Bands 2019 Play-a-thon
Tax deductible
Welcome to the 2019 Cleveland Band Play-a-thon. On Friday, October 4th, Cleveland High School Bands played for 8 hours to raise money for the band program. You can watch their work in the video above. They do this because CHS Bands receive no direct funds from the school district. We have stopped the GoFundMe campaign, but we are still accepting donations via our website through the "Make a Donation" link.
Your donations support the basic needs of running a high school band program including:
Purchasing Sheet Music: it costs $100 for one set of sheet music for a single title, $350 for a set of advanced music
Subsidies for Performance Attire
Travel to Festivals and Parades: it costs $1850 for buses to and from the Starlight Paraade
Solo and Ensemble Registrations: it costs $1000
Specialist Teacher Support
Pep Band T-Shirts and Hats for 20 incoming freshman costs $500
That's just a subset of the costs for the band.
The Cleveland High School Band Program has a long tradition of being a quality, award-winning Band Program. During the 2018-19 school year, multiple soloists and ensembles from CHS qualified and placed at State. For the 2019-20 year, the program has grown to more than 170 students who will dedicate themselves to the disciplines of practice and teamwork. The experience and mentoring they receive is invaluable.
The typical band fee for a high school band is $100 or more. CHS Band Director Mr. Gary Riler and our parent booster group, Friends of Cleveland Bands, feel strongly that we should not charge a mandatory fee to participate in band. Instead we ask our community to support the program. We do not want to limit any students ability to participate!
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CLEVELAND BAND PROGRAM?
1. Donate an amount meaningful to you. Remember that CHS Bands receive no direct funding from PPS, so you are supporting the basic needs of running a high school band. Consider giving an amount per hour played: examples: $400 ($50 per hour played), $240 ($20 per hour played), or any amount, it all helps!
2. If you are supporting a particular student PLEASE BE SURE TO PUT THE NAME OF THE STUDENT YOU SUPPORT IN THE COMMENT BOX! There are prizes that go to the student for the most money raised, largest number of gifts, and for participating. This also gets the students engaged and participating in their own fundraising success.
3. JOIN US! The Play-a-thon is a performance and the kids would love to have an audience and to see your support in person. The Play-a-thon is in the auditorium at Cleveland High School: 3400 SE 26th Ave. Portland, OR 97202
If you would like more information, please email Gary Riler at [email redacted] or visit our website at https://www.clevelandbandspdx.com/
CHS PTA is assisting with the project by receiving donations on GoFundMe which are processed through the PayPal Foundation. The CHS PTA is providing a grant of all funds raised directly to Friends of Cleveland Bands. There is no overhead taken by PTA but there is a fee paid to GoFundMe for credit card processing.
You may also donate by check to Friends of Cleveland Bands, Attn: Friends of Cleveland Bands, Cleveland High School, 3400 SE 26th Ave, Portland OR 97202. Check donations will receive a letter from FOCB acknowledging the donation and serve as your tax receipt.
