Tu Hieu Pagoda, Hue, Vietnam - Thich Nhat Hanh
Donation protected
My mother shares a connection to a special place in the world. Born in Hue, Vietnam, she grew up near Tu Hieu Pagoda, the famous “root temple” of Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh.
Recently, the 92 year old returned to Tu Hieu to await transition from this life. After being ordained as a monk there at the age of 16, Thich Nhat Hanh spread a message of mindfulness and peace throughout the world. Nine Plum Village monastic centers he founded around the globe will carry this message forward. The steps of Nhat Hanh’s journey led to being nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize by Dr. Martin Luther King in 1967, and recently being featured in the documentary “Walk with Me.”
Thich Nhat Hanh’s life has made Tu Hieu Pagoda a popular tourist destination. The monks of the temple welcome visitors to the over 170 year old structures free of charge to learn meditation techniques or simply enjoy the serene eight acre grounds.
Many of these structures are now in need of major repair. Revitalizing the venerable buildings in a way that preserves their rich cultural heritage is estimated to cost around $750,000.
As such, I created this GoFundMe as a means of gathering funds to rebuild Tu Hieu Pagoda and the surrounding grounds. To me, there is no better way to honor my mother’s roots and simultaneously remember my father, who furthered my practice of Buddhism. Donations will go directly to the temple as they are received for the monks to begin work on the main pagoda.
Please celebrate the love of one of the most influential spiritual leaders of our time by joining our effort to revitalize Tu Hieu Pagoda. Together, we can bring Thich Nhat Hanh’s love for the world full circle back to the roots!
