Chubbs and Angel’s treatment

Donation protected
My dogs are truly my children and they have both fallen ill at the same time.  Chubbs is 9y and Angel is 14.5y and until now they have both been such happy healthy dogs. This has come as a shock and has truly broken my heart.

Any donations no matter how small would be so greatly appreciated and anything above the costs of treatment and recovery will be donated to other animals in need. If anyone has any causes they know particularly are in need please let me know and I will be more than happy to help with anything we have left.

I myself have been going through some hard times the last year with extreme fatigue and low energy which is why I’m not in a financial situation to be able to deal with these costs at the moment. If I had the money I would spend it in a heartbeat to fix them. I spent 24 hours in Royal North shore hospital having sleep testing done last week and I’m waiting back on the results. As a consequence of my low moods and energy I also haven’t been working much and am on a low income because I just don’t have the energy to get through a normal day.

My amazing boyfriend Shervin has been supporting me financially and emotionally through it all and he has already put in over $1500 to my dogs in the last two weeks and he just does not have funds to support through what is to come. I also can’t put him in the situation of financial stress as I don’t feel that is fair on him. He loves the boys also and is doing all he can to help me and will continue to do so.

Last Wednesday Chubbs and Angel both underwent a natural non anaesthesia dental clean. I felt I was doing what was best for them at this point in their lives. They both needed a clean but didn’t feel safe putting them through anaesthesia at their ages. Angel now has a tooth root abscess and is in a lot of pain. This was not there last week or if it was it was not brought to my attention during his dental clean. I’m feeling let down and upset that I put him through the clean and he is now also going to have to go through surgery. On the afternoon of Thursday 31/5 the right hand side of his face swelled up like a football. After having a clean I thought a dental abscess would be unlikely so gave him an antihistamine thinking it may have been an allergic reaction to a bite. After that made no difference and the swelling got worse I made an appointment with PETstock Dural vet who Chubbs had just been booked in with earlier that morning. Dr. Marjorie has diagnosed Angel with a dental root abscess.  He has been prescribed antibiotics and pain medicines which has given him relief and he has surgery booked in for Monday to extract his rear right carnassial tooth. He is now being put through what I was trying to avoid all along, surgery. The vet has run a full blood test on him and said he’s in good health and she is being assuring that his risks associated with the surgery are low and he should make a full recovery after I pick him up on Monday afternoon. I am still very worried but have no other option. We will need a lot of prayers on Monday that he stays his strong usual self.

Chubbs’ medical issues are a lot more perplexing and complicated. Lately he’s been displaying odd behaviour on and off which in this last week has really come to the surface. I’ve taken him to multiple vet visits but I was getting no help and told that he was fine on arrival and sometimes strange behaviour can just happen. Each time I left I was very frustrated and upset that I still didn’t know what was happening to my little guy. Dr. Marjorie at PETstock Dural was amazing on Friday afternoon/night and spent a lot of time with us resulting finally with some answers. She believes he has injured a disc in his cervical spinal area (neck). We are not sure when or how and I feel absolutely awful that he’s been in pain and I did not know why. The strangest thing with his injury is that he can go from totally normal running and playing to then hunched over in pain and back to normal within a matter of minutes. At the moment he has been prescribed anti inflammatory (metacam) and some strong pain killers this will give him some immediate relief but not getting to the root of the problem. He is showing worrying signs of paralysis in his left side limbs as they are not responding as quickly as the right side. The next step for Chubbs is to see how he respond to the medication which is so far looking positive. X-rays next and depending on those will be on to a specialist vet to have MRI scans and then possible spinal surgery. If surgery is required like it seems and is delayed further he could end up with permanent damage and or paralysis. The estimated cost of spinal surgery is around $7000-$8000 and that won’t include aftercare and time he may need to stay in boarding at the surgery and under close supervision. As we are not sure of the extent of damage at the moment this could be more or less. Chubbs has also had full bloods tests run and also urine analysis which has given him a clean bill of health before any further steps are taken.

My dogs not only bring me joy in life but have touched the lives of so many others. They come to work with me daily and are never far from my side. They put smiles on the faces of everyone they meet and I would be beyond broken if either of them couldn’t continue to do this with me and live the lives they love so much.

Thank you you for reading and your amazing support. Any help you feel you can offer wether that is financial or even sharing our story is so appreciated in every way possible.

Teisha, Shervin, Chubbs and Angel
