A story about family, love, loss and early onset dementia

A young Doctor tries desperately to save his relationship before the truth behind his fiancé's ever growing erratic behavior is exposed, leaving him nowhere to turn.

When junior doctor Max runs into dazzling opera singer Elina, it's love at first sight. Soon they move in together, expecting their first child. But when Elina slowly starts acting bizarrely, their good fortune is disturbed. For some reason she seems to be losing interest in Max and her child. Max drifts into drugs, blaming himself for their misery. As the pandemic hits, he finally unravels the cause of their hardship – but it is far too late.

Eine Geschichte über Liebe, Familie, Verlust und Demenz

Es ist Liebe auf den ersten Blick, als der angehende Arzt Max der umwerfenden Sängerin Elina begegnet. Die beiden gründen eine Familie, doch als sich Elina zunehmend eigenartig verhält, gerät das Paar in eine tiefe Krise. Erst mit Beginn der Corona-Pandemie begreift Max das Ausmaß der Notlage – doch es ist längst zu spät.

I did not choose the story of remember me, it had chosen me, long before I knew. Three years ago, in April 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, I was faced with the most painful situation (I would never have thought of) in my life: I had to explain my now eight year old daughter that her mother was suffering from a strange type of early-onset dementia. At the young age of 36... That there was (and still is) no cure... Except that she, a beautiful and talented musician, couldn't feel that there was anything wrong with her.

Zu Beginn der Coronapandemie, im April 2020, stand ich vor der schmerzhaftesten Aufgabe meines Lebens: Plötzlich muss ich meiner fünfjährigen Tochter erklären, dass ihre Mutter an Demenz erkrankt ist, mit nur 36 Jahren! Dass es keine Heilung gibt, während sie selbst, die eigentlich Erkrankte, eine talentierte Musikerin, gar keine Ahnung davon zu haben scheint, dass mit ihr etwas nicht stimmt.

For years I had been searching for answers subconsciously, for explanations for the changes in my partner's personality and behavior I couldn't grasp, for the root of our relationship problems that no-one could help us solve, for an affliction that is still widely unknown even amongst medical workers, but from which many people are suffering worldwide, without knowing. Much later, I got answers and learned all about so-called Frontotemporal Dementia, or short FTD – a cruel disease that many of us have never heard of and can strike anyone.. Jahrelang hatte ich gesucht – nach Erklärungen für die schleichenden Veränderungen ihrer Persönlichkeit und ihres Sozialverhaltens, nach der Ursache für unsere Beziehungsprobleme, die unlösbar schienen – und waren.

Viel später bekam ich Antworten, und lernte alles über die sogenannte Frontotemporale Demenz, kurz FTD, "... a cruel disease that many of us have never heard of and can strike anyone..." (Statement der Familie von Bruce Willis, Februar 2023, theaftd.org).
