Help make possible the publishing of Imam Darnell Karim's book on Sister Clara Muhammad.
Assistant to Imam W. Deen Mohammed in Islamic Studies and childhood friend, Darnell (Karriem) Karim has been a practicing member of the Muslim community for over seventy four years. His entire education was attained under the directions of The University of Islam/Clara Muhammad School system.
Imam Darnell Karim began his studies in the Arabic Language and Islamic studies at the age of eleven. His instructors of the Arabic Language were several, however, the most effective teacher was Professor Jamil Diab who was his instructor for ten (10) years. His childhood friend and classmate was Imam W. Deen Mohammed who became the world wide respected Muslim Leader to over 2.5 million, and among other classmates include his wife, Gloria, sister Zahira, and the younger brother of Imam Mohammed, Dr. Akbar Muhammad an Associate Professor at Binghamton University.
Imam Darnell Karim continued his studies under the Leadership of Imam W. Deen Mohammed, and became an Instructor of Islamic Studies and Arabic language at the Clara Muhammad School from 1976 to 1987. He frequently travelled to many Masjids (Islamic Centers) throughout the United States to instruct Muslim adults in Islamic studies and the Arabic Language.
With this rich history of experiences, Imam Darnell Karim has been working on a new book on Sister Clara Muhammad.
The book invites the reader to learn more about the founder of The Nation of Islam who introduced to the community the idea of having our own school, and how Sister Clara Muhammad transformed this idea into a reality - from classes in her home, to what became the Sister Clara Muhammad schools across the United States as well as the Caribbean Islands.
The school became the first National Independent Islamic School system in America, which has produced many educators and qualified professionals.

About the Author

Written by Fitrah Muhammad, Executive Producer of Study Al-Islam:
Imam Darnell Karim was born in1935. At the age of 14 years old, he was asked by the Honorable Elijah Muhammad (ra) to step to the stage and recite the call to prayer (Athaan) at an annual convention which was always held in the month of February where thousands gathered. Imam Karim, a voice of innocence, recited beautifully the call to prayer “G’d is greater, G’d is greater, come to prayer, come to success” in the Arabic language. Many who sat on stage as the program began, witnessed, and later commented, that the recitation resonated with the Honorable Elijah Muhammad as he listened and they watched tears form in eyes! This historical event which is documented, happened again years later at another large public meeting. This time the honor was bestowed upon Imam Darnell by his childhood friend, and son of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, Imam W. Deen Mohammed (ra) who was now the leader in succession to his father. Imam Darnell of full adult age, and in his upright nature, with grace and perfect Arabic, recited the Athaan. So moved, Imam Mohammed referred to his friend as “our Bilal”. Bilal is an important historical figure of Abbysianin descent, who was once enslaved, accepted Islam, and became a trusted and important companion of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Bilal helped spread Al-Islam in the early years and became the 1st ever mu-athin (caller to prayer) in the history of Al-Islam, an honor bestowed on him by our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) of 14 hundred years ago.
