January 2024 : the program I started called #NuOdja

I am a Cabo Verdean woman who was born in the US and started this nonprofit to bridge the gap of resources, by providing essentials and creative solutions for problems that are often overlooked, but tend to deeply affect mental health.

I started this program, after I moved to Cabo Verde in 2019 and within a month I broke a pair of glasses. When I tried to replace them I was quoted $320.00 ( which, at the time, was undoable even for me) . Later that summer I came across a service where I was able to purchase four pairs of glasses for less than $50.00 ... and that was the beginning of the idea.

It blew my mind how low of a cost these prescription glasses were, as someone who has worn glasses since I was 7 years old and spent many years of my life, afraid an unable to truly interact with the world around me, it was hard to believe that I could now have a pair of glasses at less than the cost of meal. When I found the service was not available in Cabo Verde I was bothered. I did not understand how as a Cabo Verdean American, my American side could have access to glasses yet my other side could not.

It would take another 3 years to develop my idea and the non-profit into something that was actually beneficial, and then in July of 2022 I was able to deliver the first 30 pairs of glasses, and another 25 in November of that same year, another 25 in August of 2023 and in December of 2023 another 46.

As the new year begins, we are one delivery away from clearing all the backlog of residents of Fogo who have requested assistance from the Municipal Chambers and the mayor and total roughly 200 pairs of glasses . Which will officially complete Phase 1 of NuOdja for the island of Fogo, Cabo Verde.

Our goal for 2024 is to provide the remaining 8 islands of Cabo Verde each with 100 pairs of glasses, and thus we are raising funds.

Completing Phase 1 of NuOdja for Cabo Verde would mean providing anyone in need, with a prescription, with a pair of glasses. It would mean more confidence in social interactions, more precision in the job performance, and overall lifting of mental health for those who have felt as if they cannot afford to see the beauty of life.

A pair of glasses can quite literally change someones life. The confidence, safety and happiness that comes from being able to clearly see the world around you is not one that should be overlooked. My opinion is that the right to see is as universal as water.

Eyeglasses are an essential resource, and NuOdja is here to provide. For $11.00 you can show that you too believe everyone should have access to essential resources regardless of age, gender or country of birth.
